Cassius R.I.P.

Sadly, we had to put our cat Cassius to sleep yesterday . This was the first time I have had to put a pet to sleep, and it was a very hard day - still very sad yet today.

Miles and I got Brutus and Cassius (brother and sister) 14 years ago when they were 6 weeks old. In many ways, they represent my life with Miles thus far, as they have been around for as long as I can remember Miles and I being together...have lived in each home with us, slept on our beds, provided endless companionship and joy. (in fact, Brutus sleeps with my son Grant every night, it's so cute).

Cassius had thyroid cancer and was rapidly losing weight. She stopped eating a week ago, and even before then she couldn't hold anything down. She refused to take her medication, so rather than waiting for her to die painfully of a heart attack or some other form of organ failure, we opted to give her a peaceful send off yesterday.

I miss her already, and Brutus has been crying a little today too.

Anyway, rest in peace Cassius, we loved you

Oh thanks guys...I never thought it would impact me so hard! I feel just awful.

Originally, Miles had opted not to take her remains, but he got home yesterday from the vet (he took her, I stayed here with the kids) and he wasn't one foot in the door before he said "It's not right without her in the house, I am going back for her ashes!" and he ran back to the vets.

Now, I have no idea where I am going to put an urn with cat ashes, in fact it's a tad creepy to me, but at least she will still be in the house

So sorry to hear about you pet, they really do become part of out familys.

I buried my first cat in a flower bed close to my house and planted a big yellow blooming Jasmine vine (that comes back every spring) where she was buried. I also have a sleeping kitty garden statue. in my flower bed.

We also buried ours in our yard and my son and I made & hand-painted a cross for her. He was just about 9 at the time of her death and he's always known her to be around so it was really heartbreaking for all of us. It was his first pet death.

We have the ashes of both our hedgehogs.. they are in little wooden boxes and my hubby keeps them in his office. We were just talking the other day (I was telling dh about Nerak's Tiggy) about our olderst dog - who is 6... there is a pet cemetery near our house and we are thinking about putting her there when the time comes. (Althought I have to admit that is a bit creepy too!) But we love her so much
Kaki, I am sorry you all are going through this - seems to be a bit of an epidemic on the board the last week or so
Peace and comfort to all who are mourning the loss of a pet today...

Aww, you guys I'm so sorry. I know just what you're going through. We had to do the same thing for Carib, my old girl who I got as a kitty, just about three months ago. She was 18 years old when she got a large abscess on her face and just started wasting away. The vet said she was too weak to survive surgery. So we spent about a month giving her everything she wanted, and finally put her down. I still swear I see her walk by sometimes, and then I realize it's Shammy, one of our other cats. It was a very sad day. She was my first pet, and we sorta grew up together. We buried her in the backyard here in Playa, just three blocks from her namesake (the Caribbean). We'll be planting a little tree right there as soon as they are done working in the yard. When Tony's cat Sam died, we buried him in our backyard in San Francisco and put a sweet little Japanese statue on the spot. Every time we looked out there, we thought of Sam.

Hang in there, and hug each other and your other kitty even more.

-Cheri

Oh thanks again guys! Karen, I had no idea you had a loss too...so sorry. I haven't even been lurking/reading the boards very much lately, or I would have known. Thanks for the stories and ideas too, never thought of burying the urn. Linda, I know what you mean about these kind of threads, but somehow putting my feelings in writing helped a lil' bit . Thanks for your thoughts!

p.s., how funny that you have a cat named Shammy Cheri! Did you name her before the playa.info board days? I just love that...

I'm so sorry to hear about Cassius. We have had to do this sad duty too many times. Our solution is to take the ashes and bury them in the spring and plant a tree or shrub over them. It sounds a tad strange, but I talk to them when I am out gardening. Cassie our great dane is out there, she loved to lay on top of the hill and survey her domain so thats where she is now for all time. Pepper the kitty is under the fire pit (you had to know pepper to get this) and Sweet Willie would spend all day nibbling on grass, so he is under a garden of all grasses.
