Mount Rainier National Park destroyed?
Hey, you Washington guys... I just got a link to a german America-board where someone wrote that in the recent floodings and storms the Mount Rainier National park got totally destroyed. Pls. tell me this is not true...
I have seen pics of bad damage and when I was there last year I have seen what too much rain can do to the mountain and the road going up there. But still... maybe it's not as bad as it seemed at first? Hoping to get encouraging news.Andrea |

No, it wasn't destroyed. I believe that I read there was quite a bit of damage and that certain areas will have to be shut down and roads repaired, but certainly not destroyed. Funny how news reports get, huh?

We went to Longmire in Sept. 2005 but were not able to go any further as too much rain had damaged the street then too. I have seen the small creek being a wild river which had already washed away part of the camp ground further down the mountain. It was a pity we couldn't go up to Paradise Inn that day as the road was closed but seeing the small river being that wild and seeing the damage was VERY impressing. So I have an idea how it looks like now.

Spoke with some Park Service Rangers when they were in court the other day. The main road is going to be awhile. It was washed out badly in the area of Kautz Creek. It's not just a matter of them rebuilding a new road....they have to do impact studies, ecology reports, blah blah blah. Lots of govt red tape involved with this and funding is really bad for the national parks in this administration. So...the prediction from the people who live and work there is that it is going to be all of this winter and a very strong likelihood that the summer tourist season will be badly impacted. The people who are booked to stay at Longmire this winter are being taken in buses down a road outside the park (Skate Creek Road) and then brought back in a back way into Longmire. It's essentially a service road for the Park Service personnel but they've agreed to let it be used very minimally by these buses.
