Hello to my new Playa Friends :)

I (Nikki) found this site while planning our upcoming vacation to Playa (April 6-14), and now I’m addicted to it!! You are all really making me wish that I didn’t still have 79 long days to wait (in Chicago weather), and the trip reports have such great info and have helped me so much. So thank you to all of you that maintain and contribute to this site.

I first laid eyes on Playa five years ago when my roommate and I spent a week in Puerto Aventuras. We were on a van that took us from the airport to our hotel with some other folks who got dropped off first in Playa at Mosquito Blue, and I knew that I had to come back some day for more than just a drive by. My first trip to Playa was unfortunately not much longer that a drive by. My boyfriend (Greg) and I only stayed in Playa for two nights after spending the rest of our vacation in Cancun.

The good news is that we fell in love with Playa and Isla Mujeres on that trip. We stayed at Mosquito Blue in Playa for 2 nights and had the best time. This time we are doing it right and spending 8 whole nights in Playa. I’m so excited, and have noticed that I now spend an increasing amount of time sneaking a peek at the forums and a little less time working every day.

HI and welcome! You'll find that that forum peeking only increases as you get closer to your trip! I figure in a few more weeks I'll be glued to it day and night!

Welcome Nikki and Greg
This is a great site and taking up wayyyy too much of my time!!! But I wouldn't have it any other way! It has become an addiction. I'm actually wondering how much I will miss when I'm in Playa next week!
I'll never catch up to all the posts!

Oohh, by the way, how did you like Isla Mujeres? We're going there for a day trip or maybe a few days next week!

Welcome Nikki. You found the right place for info about PdC. We are leaving for Playa (our 8th visit since 4/02) on April 6 as well. Flying out of Milw. at 6 am and should be on the beach by noon or so. We are doing the Playacar AI thing this time but stayed right in Playa last month and loved it. Where are you staying?

We loved Isla Mujeres. We went there on one of the snorkeling trips that leaves from Cancun, and once we made it to the little island (Playa Norte) it was like a breath of fresh air. We loved how laid back it was. We ere only there for a few hours but was the most beautiful white sandy beach and clear water. We just strolled from beach bar to beach bar in search of the perfect margarita (they were all so good that it was too hard to pick a winner) taking breaks in between to swim in the ocean. It was the best day of our vacation.
I went back to Isla Mujeres later that year (over Thanksgiving of 2004) to bring my mom on a little vacation that she desperately needed, and it was a perfect getaway. She and I stayed for 5 nights at the Avalon on Playa Norte (Mom is an all inclusive loving gal who likes to just sit on her chair on the beach with her book and frozen drink in hand). I don't think we left Playa Norte the whole time we were there. I have some great pics, but will have to see if I can locate them right now as I just did new paint and carpet at home and my house is torn apart!!
I would love to do a day trip to Isla Mujeres when we are in Playa in April, and rent one of those golf carts to drive around the island, but I've heard that they're pretty expensive. What are you planning on doing on your day trip over there?

We are staying at Shangri La Caribe for the first 4 nights and then at Mosquito Beach for the last 4. We decided to go with small hotels this trip, but I am a sucker for falling asleep to the sound of the ocean. We haven't booked flights yet b/c they are pretty expensive out of Chicago right now. I would love to have a direct, early morning flight so we could hit the beach on Friday too. Maybe I should look into flying out of Milwaukee. OMG - we'd have to wake up pretty early coming from Chi, or just not go to sleep Thursday night!!!

We stay the night prior to our flight at a hotel close to the airport. They keep the car in a fenced in lot and shuttle us back and forth. Works out good.

Regarding your flights, you are going at a peak travel time as you may well know. Getting a "deal" might be tough. Getting a direct early morning flight even tougher. We always book as early as possible. Usually late summer, early fall. My wife works for the local school system so we're kind of locked into going around Easter. Not that that's necessarily that bad, just that it's hard to get a break on the flights. Good luck.

Hi Nikki
So glad to hear about Isla Mujeres. I think that will be the hilight of our trip! We are just going over early and renting a golf cart and exploring on our own. My husband would never rent a car in Playa......too scary and wouldn't know where he's going, so this way, I figure we can't really get lost and once we figure out the island, we'll start doing the happy hours! I guess the beach to go to would be Playa Norte? If so, then that's where we are headed. I'd also like to do a little shopping. I hear it might be less expensive than Playa. I think the street is called Hidalgo. I am really excited about doing this!!
