Hi Amanda,

The first thing I would do is to drop in at Tom's Scuba at Burnet and Keonig. One of the two best dive shops (the other is Scubaland) in the area and super great people. They have the maps from Laura, the "Map Chick". These maps are pure gold and worth much more than thier cost. Also, since you into scuba you need to check out diving at the Aquarena Center in San Marcos. The BEST (and most challenging) diving in the state.

Welcome, neighbor! We're just down the road from you. Glad to hear you love Playa as much as the rest of us! If you haven't "Planted your Butt," please do so! Your state needs your representation!

Jeff & Becky,

Thanks for the recommendations on places to go around here, because I haven't done any research and you just help me out tons. I will have to check out all those places soon. It is really cool to see all the people that go to Playa from Texas.

Hi y'all,
Once I move to Texas I hope to make it to a few of the Texas Peepmeets. Of course, I also plan to return to Playa at least once every year.
Right now I'm just enjoying living here until the U.S. Government grant me a visa to return to my gal in Dallas. That can't come soon enough!

My Space & Texas Peep meets

You are right about Myspace. I am on Jason's, Dave's, Adam's & Eric's Myspace and I think you are on theirs also. Where do you guys usually do your peep meets in Texas??? I lived in Dallas about 8 years ago and then moved here to Austin. I feel like it is time to change where I live and Playa seems like a neat area to live. Are you arriving in Playa on February 20th??? I am going to fly down sometime in February, should know by Tuesday. Hopefully we can meet while I am down there. Hope you are having a great day!!!

Hi Amanda,

If you are interested in diving in San Marcos, you will need to go through the "Science Diver" course offered by the Aquarena Center . It takes a weekend to complete and costs $220, but once you are finished you can dive in the lake for free. Great place to train for cenote diving, the water is 72 degrees and the specifice gravity of the water is the same as in the cenotes. With 50 to 100' vis it beats the local lakes by a wide margin.

With regards to local dive shops, talk to both Scubaland and Tom's to see which one you like best. You cannot go wrong with either one. Personally, I prefer Scubaland, just due to the people at the shop.

BTW, we live on Col Travis' Spanish land grant in Hays County. It was part of Dewitt's Colony and when his estate was divided this land was apportioned according to the number and size of cypress trees

Sounds like a great move, keep us posted. I am going to PDC for the first time on Feb 4, 07 and feel like I have already been there many times because of this forum. Great work once again everyone for helping us newbies. Also a first time diver last year in VI, anxious to be back in the water again.
