In a bizarre move, Mitt gives commencement address at a college whose founder lists Mormonism as a cult
Romney to Robertson's school to court conservative Christian vote By Rachel Zoll, AP Religion Writer | May 4, 2007 A visit this weekend to the Rev. Pat Robertson's school illustrates the challenge for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney as he courts the all-important evangelical vote. The former Massachusetts governor is to give the commencement address Saturday at Robertson's Regent University in Virginia, a golden opportunity to reach core GOP voters. Yet the many people who seek spiritual guidance from Robertson's Christian Broadcasting Network and its Web site will find Romney's Mormon faith listed as a cult. The candidate and his Christian supporters have been working hard to overcome evangelical antipathy toward the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, whose 19th-century founder, Joseph Smith, said he revised parts of the Bible to correct it. That should really endear Mitt to the biblical inerrantists |

While it is still way early, here is an article about the most recent poll
Here is a link to the article, which reports that: The poll also showed that all three leading Democratic contenders beat their Republican counterparts in head-to-head competition among registered voters. But there is a lot more there for those who click and read the short article. |

Leader of Christian right-wing says he'll never vote for Giuliani, and if Rudy is the candidate he'll probably not cast a vote for president:
• Focus on the Family's James Dobson says he'll never vote for Giuliani • Republican candidate has put off conservatives with his position on abortion • If Giuliani is nominated, Dobson says he may not vote for anyone • Dobson, heard on 3,500 radio stations, endorsed Bush in 2004 Adjust font size: Decrease fontDecrease font Enlarge fontEnlarge font WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Religious conservative leader James Dobson will sit out the 2008 presidential election if former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is the Republican presidential nominee, he wrote Thursday in an online column. In a piece published on the conservative Web site WorldNetDaily, Dobson wrote that Giuliani's support for abortion rights and civil unions for homosexuals, as well as the former mayor's two divorces, were a deal-breaker for him. "I cannot, and will not, vote for Rudy Giuliani in 2008. It is an irrevocable decision," he wrote. "If given a Hobson's -- Dobson's? -- choice between him and Senators Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, I will either cast my ballot for an also-ran -- or if worse comes to worst, not vote in a presidential election for the first time in my adult life. My conscience and my moral convictions will allow me to do nothing else." Dobson, 71, is the founder and chairman of Colorado-based Focus on the Family, but said he was writing as "a private citizen and not on behalf of any organization or party." He endorsed President Bush in 2004, the first time he endorsed a presidential candidate. Dobson's organization says his daily radio program is heard by as many as 220 million listeners over 3,500 stations in the United States. He's also seen on 80 television stations, and 10 Focus on the Family magazines have 2.3 million subscribers, the group says. Dobson attacked Giuliani for publicly saying he hates abortion but supports a woman's right to have one. Giuliani had been criticized for being ambiguous on his abortion views, but firmly stated last week that he supports abortion rights. "Is Rudy Giuliani presidential timber? I think not," Dobson wrote. "Can we really trust a chief executive who waffles and feigns support for policies that run contrary to his alleged beliefs? Of greater concern is how he would function in office. Will we learn after it is too late just what the former mayor really thinks? What we know about him already is troubling enough." Maria Comella, a Giuliani spokeswoman, said that he is aware that his views on abortion may cost him some votes, but that he respects those who disagree with him. "From the beginning, Mayor Giuliani has been straightforward on where he stands on the issue," Comella said. "It's a sign of leadership to stand by your views in the face of political expediency." As for Giuliani's three marriages, Dobson wrote that there are "moral concerns about Giuliani's candidacy that conservatives should find troubling." "Rudy wanted conservatives to believe he had undergone some kind of an election-eve conversion, more or less," Dobson wrote. "Then the contradictions began catching up with him, which often happens to those who play games with words. No, this leopard has not changed his spots." |

This Thompson actor fellow. What do ya'll think of him entering the race? I wonder if the conservative wing of the party will flock to him. I suspect so, since two of the leading candidates now are liberals (Giuliani and Romeny) and one is a moderate (McCain).
Not sure that Thompson is the guy to lead them out of the wilderness. I'm hoping Newt throws his hat in the ring also. What do you think? |

Thompson has a good campaigning persona, but as I understand it, his Senate record is pretty skimpy -- because he didn't get actively involved in a lot of legislation. I see him as a cipher, a dilletante, and I don't think the country will be in a hurry to make that mistake again. I hope Newt gets in there, too. The resulting rhetoric and press coverage would be quite amusing. Plus Gingrich has a record of not really caring what goes down in flames, as long as he gets to have his say in the spotlight. I think the religious branch of the conservative arm of the Republican Party should be throwing its heft behind Mike Huckabee of Arkansas. Mostly, I think the religious branch of the conservative arm of the Republican Party should listen to Billy Graham, who told them long ago to not mix religion with politics, because it would be too easy for their religious intentions to be manipulated by the politicians. |

Anyone catch the Dem's debate last night? I know there is no way he'll get the nomination, but I love the kind of crazy Kucinich throws out there. It is refreshing and he has nothing to lose. Everyone else tries deperately to sound like a soundbite. Hillary is looking presidental...
