You get your turn deciding the real election in our screwy system, remember?

Interesting things happening in our County. My boss went to vote, they couldn't find his or any of his families on the roll and yet he had his voter information from the county. My daughter went to vote, same thing (and they remember her from the last election). She filled out a provincial, they will look at it if anything is close. I'm registered as permanently absent , so they automatically mail me my ballot a few weeks before the election.

Heard there are issues in some polling places in San Francisco, running out of Democratic primary ballots for registered independents. This might hurt Obama.

This is the first time it has counted in California.

Well let me tell you, it was good to get out and to see so many Democrats in an apparently rather heavily Republican area and to go through things and they even made me chair for the caucus and an alternate for the county Democratic assembly & convention next month and Benjamin got to see things in action and the whole works.

Unfortunately for the system (though perhaps fortunately from an educational standpoint), the main lesson is that caucuses are pretty much as fair as the Electoral College. We had 21 people from our precinct who from the get-go went 14 for Obama and 6 for Clinton, with 1 uncommitted. The result? Obama and Clinton each got 1 delegate. In my buddy's precinct they went 20 for Obama, 10 for Clinton and 1 uncommitted. The result? Obama and Clinton each got 1 delegate. And in the precinct behind us, they went 18 for Obama and 9 for Clinton. The result? Obama and Clinton each got 1 delegate. So between the three, 54 for Obama, 25 for Clinton, but they evenly split the delegates, with each getting 3.

Happily, Benjamin at 10 years old could immediately see that this was screwy. Then I just had to tell him that basically, that's the same kind of thing that we do nationally, too, and that that's why Bush could get elected even though 650,000 more people voted for Gore, and why the Mexican announcers were right when they commented while covering the 2004 election that America wasn't like Mexico, where they had a one man, one vote system.

BUT ANYWAY, they did have cookies! And we got some pics for yous all:

arriving at the last minute and cold!

they told me to look serious in my position as chair

big crowd in the middle school gym

the secretary tallying votes and filling out paperwork

my John Hancock on the proceedings

Anyone notice who's standing next to McCain's wife during the celebrations?
Hmmmm. . . .
You think McCain will ask Lieberman to be his running mate?

Bumper to bumper traffic for over a mile in suburban precincts here in MN. No parking any closer than a mile away for me. The caucus was packed! They say it is a record turnout here in MN. Winners are Obama and Romney.

It was incredible in Boise. People were very excited about voting. The line to get into the arena was very long. Inside it was packed so volunteers collected our ballots outside. I wish that I could have stayed to watch the election of delegates, but there was no way that I would have been able to get a seat.

I'm glad I live in a small town.
Took about 2 minutes.
A few years ago we had a line, about 10 people.
