Well these Rpublican button folks have links to the state Republican websites on their site. According to the Dallas paper they were also selling a button that said this:
Quote:
One said, "Press 1 for English. Press 2 for Deportation"
It wasn't long ago the Democrats on this forum for things that were being done by MoveOn and stupid stuff written as anonymous comments on The Daily Kos.

This is nothing new for Republicans in Texas. Many are very straight forward about their racism. In fact it is "old school" politics in Texas. I can't believe you don't think we should be upset about racism Mark.

Of course, talking about a new form of politics is so much easier than actually practicing it. A simple search of the company name would have led you to the fact that the pin is not being sold by TX Republicans or the GOP. Instead, you chose to present it as fact. Politics as usual, with new players who think that because they tell you that it is "new and improved", that you will believe it. Same old laundry detergent in a new box.
Wow, the BS meter is really through the roof!

And did you have a very bad day, or what?

Let's review: I said

Quote:
Brought to you by your friends at the Texas GOP convention.
This was based on having seen the Ben Smith Politico blog comment

Quote:
On sale at the Texas GOP convention.
which itself was based on a Dallas Morning News report if the same thing.

You blew up at me, saying I knew damned well that this button was being sold outside the convention hall, a distinction I never mentioned either way (read the above quotes again). Then you proceeded to tell me that I was full of BS for practicing the same old politics (though you offered no criticism of anyone selling that pin!) and began lambasting Obama. Now you offer more of the same.

Do you think these weren't Republicans, making and selling this pin? I mean, according to the DMN report, "Republican" is part of their name, apart from the fact that they were indeed at the Texas GOP convention... Do you think it's some sort of new politics to put such stuff on a pin being sold at a state party convention? How could it be old politics to decry such things?

Your reaction is mystifying...

This election is going to try us as a country as to what is acceptable, and what we thought of as a long gone legacy of racism will rear it's head. It is a needed conversation, but it will be messy.

A booth at this weekend’s Texas Republican convention sold buttons asking, “If Obama Is President…Will We Still Call It The White House?”:

The company that makes the buttons boasts providing “Patriotic and Republican Products.” Another button they sell features a picture of Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY), with the phrase: “Life’s a b**ch, don’t vote for one.” (HT: AmericaBlog)

It would be nice if decent people from both sides would more routinely protest the BS itself, rather than spending their time claiming that somehow we are not responsible....I know some may think this is old-fashioned, or claim it as old-school politics...but why can't we all stand up against this crap...whether it be by a vendor in a GOP convention hall or in our local communities..whether it is bigotry by liberals, or by conservatives..it is still blatant bigotry and should be clearly condemed by reasonable people.

I mean Welshy's protest seems to miss the point IMO..why is he not angry that these folks were not asked to leave?

Well as you know Democrats in Texas hold few offices. Remember the anti-gay propaganda being used by GW Bush when he ran for Governor? The right in Texas seems to mostly agree with racism if they let the buttons be sold at their convention. I wonder if the concession paid a percentage back to the Texas GOP?

Just for the record, it's not like I was shocked (in the sense of greatly surprised) at seeing the button. I mean, racism is always to some degree shocking to me, but we've already seen some and you definitely expect it, given Obama's race/ethnicity, and you know, nobody is exactly surprised to see a southern US state be the origin of such a story, particularly where a conservative group is involved.

I think we'll see worse things. I think the email that was passed around to me was worse, along these lines, and by a good chunk, too.

If you're a liberal, of course, there's even a kind of... I don't know what the right word for it is... maybe a feeling of being vindicated, or something -- a kind of "Ha -- I told you so!" feeling -- to seeing something like this connected to a GOP convention, maybe particularly in a southern state. Like many comments on the Politico link say, "Keep it up, Republicans! Show people your true colors!" or things along that line.

Anyway, just rambling, but I was much more struck and confused by your reaction, Mark, than by the thing itself.

I dunno, Jacko. In our climate of guilt by association and denouncing endorsers, it gets fuzzy. IMO, the GOP will court the racist vote at the peril of being on the wrong side of decency and they probably know it. They probably also know that a lot of folks will buy and proudly wear that pin.

"old school" in Texas refers to the Democrat party.... you know that...... now, if you woulda said "new school", I might have agreed

Buy it...perhaps..so they can laugh about it in private with their bigoted friends...wear it in public? I doubt these type of people are up to it.

I would still like to believe that most conservatives are decent people, if not seriously off-track the last few election cycles based upon the fears generated by 9/11 that allowed the "confused" Bush reactions......but I must say that Mark's reaction floors me as well.

It is the enjoyment which bothers me (not you, personally, Scott, just in general). I might think W has been a bad president, but I take no enjoyment from his dismal ratings or jokes about his person or family.
