Mmm, bleu cheese pizza. Sounds delicious. I dip my pizza in either bleu cheese or ranch and all of my friends think I've lost my marbles. I'll have to be sure to grab a slice of this.

Pizza
I would like to mention a brand new place to experience very, very delicious Naples-style pizza. It's called PUMMAROLA or something very similar and is in the extreme north end, catty-corner to the Natz Ti Ha condos. The guy making the pizza also owns the condos on the same property of the pizzeria, and when I was in Playa last spring, I looked at his condo where he had a pizza oven built into his rooftop terrace. He proclaimed that made the best pizza ever. Well, I guess he went and opened his own joint just to prove the point to the public. The pizza is woodfired with a thin, bubbly crust and a delicious red sauce (if you don't go for a white one). Toppings are a tad more plentiful than I usually care for, but some people will consider this a bonus. My favorite was a Margherita style with anchovies. Caveat emptor - the service does not have their act together . An antipasto and a pasta ordered never materialized, and the pizzas flew out of the kitchen with lightning speed. Also, the red wine sucked, unless you like cold, fizzy Lambrusco-style stuff - I don't.
Another great pizza was found at La Siesta(closer to center of town - don't have address). Again, woodfired, thin crust, perfect ratio of topping to sauce, to crust. We loved the Marinara style (again with anchovies!), which is without cheese. A friend ordered the pie with seafood, which was mighty tasty, although I don't love seafood combined with cheese as a rule. A splendid homemade tagliatelle bolognese was worth a return meal as well. |

For those of you up to a worthwhile trip down the highway, CHEMUYIL is another place to experience great pizza. Cheymuyil is a peaceful Mayan community on the jungle side of the highway just five minutes south of Akumal, more or less twenty minutes drive from Playa. Watch carefully for the entrance. The place is called PIZZERIA LEO. Not only is the pizza tasty but they have fresh salads and pasta, too. The restaurant is situated in the centre of town and it's kinda fun to watch the locals, most of which work in the tourist industry, getting off the buses as they return home all decked out in their traditional Mayan costumes.
Check it out and let me know what you think. Provecho!! |

YAY New Haven pizza, both Frank Pepe's and its rival down on the other end of Wooster St., Sally's! Oh my god my mouth is watering now...So which pizza in PDC is most like that??? No wait, don't tell me -- I will end up eating nothing else. No wait, do tell me!

WE had Hawaiian pizza (ham and pineapple) at Karen's Grill (is that restaurant still there even?) last trip- it was damn yummy! With lots of Tabasco.
They had a really good house band there too- are they still there? |

Karen's is still there. I have not eaten at Karen's for almost two years. At that time I thought the Pizza was as bad as their bathrooms and I have avoided both since that time. The place has had a make over since then, perhaps the bathrooms are better, I sure hope the food has improved.
Pizza Pazza on 10th (there are few locations) is the only Pizza in Playa for me. |

Thanks Mike. How embarassing.
I thought the Hawaiian pizza there was pretty good! We really enjoyed the beand that were there- they were playing flute/Mexican music. (can't explain it.) I remember seeing Karens too on some show that was on cable....can't recall the name but they went to different hot spots and showed the nightlife- there was a little short waiter on the show balancing glasses on his head and it must have been a regular thing because he did it the two nights we were there too. He was very talented!

I've had the unfortunate experience of using Karen's bathrooms once a number of years ago and after that couldn't bring myself to eat or drink anything from there. 1st impressions... I suppose. Now Pizza Pazza has fab pizza... I have a hard time passing one of their places and not grabbing a slice... even if I've just eaten.
