Pizza
I'll be chowing on Mexican, and plenty of it, to be sure, but I am on an ongoing quest for amazing pizza. The pizza that I crave is thin and blistery with classic Margherita toppings applied sparingly, and most key, WOODFIRED. My seminal experience was at a harbor joint in Cannes called La Pizza, where I proceeded to enjoy several times a week throughout a year. I've since found ambrosial pizza at Frank Pepe's in New Haven, CT, Lombardi's in Manhattan (coal fired will do just fine!), and unbelievably, a little place in Turks and Caicos some years back. Great pizza is where you find it! Can there be a pizza of my dreams waiting for me in PDC? Tell me your favorites there. Thanks.

We rave about the blue cheese pizza at Renzo's Pizza, located on 5th Avenue between Calle22 and Calle26. It's thin and sold by the slice (10 pesos) and tastes phenominal. This may be run of the mill pizza to your taste buds but it bumped up the charts for me. Be glad to hear your comments there CurlyGirl la PizzaCritic.

We loved the pizza at a little hole-in-the-wall mediterranean place on Calle 12, between 5th and 10th (north side). There's a picture of it in my Mexico Part 1 pictures here:

Nope, da Gabi is the other side (towards the beach) of 5th on Calle 12. I like da Gabi a lot, too, especially breakfast (we stayed there in the hotel, mostly because it was so close to my son's place). I have completely forgotten the name of the pizza place .... maybe the names of two owners?

Pizza
I'm taking note of all of your suggestions, thanks.
BarbC, that photo was a total teaser - where's the pizza?! I wanted to post this on "Changarros....", and e-mailed one of the moderators my request yesterday. I did not receive a response so I went ahead and posted on the general forum. |

We really liked the pizza at a little place on 10th between Calle 8 and 10. It's almost directly across the street from Papa Johns Pizza. Though I can't remember the name for the life of me. It is very similar to the one BarbC posted about....a small whole in the wall type of place. You select your slice(s) from the selection of pizzas behind a glass counter. I had blue cheese, yum! There are a few tables outside and a bar along one of the walls if you want to stay and eat there. It was always very busy in the evenings.

Da Bruno y Cleo is excellent, and not just the pizza, the Italian mother makes some fresh pasta as well some days. Years ago Da Gabi was THE best pizza place in Playa, there were even waiting lines almost every night. But lately, the place seems to have been slipping, the last time I went there the cheese they used on the pizza was so terrrible none of our group could finish theirs, and that excludes the service..... :-? It is a shame because they have a wonderfull wood oven, the type that can make the best tasting pizzas, and the owner is nice enough. But for the moment I miss the Da Gabi of old and don't frequent that place anymore.

Thanks, all for these wonderful tips. I'm saving up a big envelope of info mostly with info found on these boards. Today I'm doing mega-loads of laundry for the big pre-pack tomorrow, and then I'm into the home stretch.
