Security of personal items
My husband and I will be staying at ERC in June. I've read some "horror stories" about people's personal belongings disappearing from their rooms at this and other resorts. So, I'm wondering, are the in-room safes not secure? Would the general advice be to leave valuable/irreplaceable items at home (such as wedding rings)?

We've never had any problems with anything disappearing from our rooms, but we keep most valuables in our safe (we don't remove our wedding rings and I don't take any other "good" jewelery along). We keep our safe locked with our passports and extra money/credit cards and travel docs in there. I generally keep my camera on me (you just never know what you'll need to shoot!). I wouldn't leave money laying around, as a room attendent may think it's a tip.

Leave your nice diamond wedding rings at home. We bought my wife a gold band to wear on such occasions. We even used it in Jamaica to get married. While we were there, one couple lost the brides new ring on a water excursion. Leaving it at home is just smart thinking in my book.

we use the hotel safe - and we leave our rings and good watches at home, not because of security problems but because we are just more comfortable being at the beach and in and out of the water without our "good jewellery" one of us wears a waterproof watch and that's that!

Been quite a few times now and have never had anything taken. I leave my good rings at home and it's funny but I too bought a little wedding band last fall so I won't have to worry bout jewlery when I snorkle, FatCat, etc.....
Taking and using my ATM card has saved us from carrying much cash too. |

safes.....
never had any probs with leaving stuff in safe etc....and I always bring my good stuff with me whats the point of having it if you dont wear it....and it's insured anyway....I personally don't mind taking chances...you never know if you left it behind you could be burgled at home!
.....LOL my only problem is working out how to program the safe!! had a bit of bother last year and the flamin thing was bleeping for ages till the maintenence guy came...he said it needed batteries..don't know if he said that to be polite (maybe thought I was thick as two short planks!) we got there in the end.....I hope I can do it right this time! ![]() |

Leave it at home or lock it up!
We've been to Cancun and Playa a couple of times each and only had a problem on our last trip in December to Playa. I'm not going to tell you what boutique hotel it is, because I still like the hotel and it tends to have a very good reputation. We just bought a video camera to take video's of Playa so we could show people the place we're always bragging about. We lock everything up in our safe, passports, money, Ipod, wallets, and video camera, & digital cameras, but one night we forgot to put the video camera back in the safe after using it all day and we went for dinner at 6:30 and came back at 10:00, finding our door sitting ajar. We looked around the room and in the safe and everything looked fine, so we thought we were lucky. The next morning as we were getting ready, I went to put on my Ray Ban sunglasses - gone. My husband had brought two pairs of sunglasses, one he always wore and the Oakley's that he's had for years and hadn't worn down there yet - gone. Then we realized we forgot to put the video camera in the safe and it was gone as well.
So the short of this story is, everything that we did lock up in the safe was fine, anything that's out, you take a risk of it going missing. I will still go to Playa, but I will only stay at a place that has a safe in the room and a deadbolt on the door. |

If anything we have seen nothing but sheer honesty and honor. If you have read our trip report(gingele) on the last night my wife left her purse which contained her passport and Travelers Checks at a restaurant (Rey's). The waiter ran down the street after us to return it. What do you have to worry about??? Just use some common sense and you won't lose a thing.

Put simply, if there's something that you'd be leaving in your room that would be tragic for you to lose, don't bring it. And if you're not comfortable leaving those items at home in an empty house, leave them with a trusted friend/neighbor who will be home.
My rings are the most precious things to me, but I never take them off except to clean them. I bring my diamond stud earrings and lock them in the safe when not wearing them. And if they get stolen.... well... life goes on. Things are THINGS. P.S. Have never had anything stolen out of our room or room safe in Playa, whether AI or non-AI. Once we left our backpack at Carlos & Charlies (after waaaaay too many margaritas,) and the waiter caught us just before we walked out the door. |
