Maybe Service Pack 2. I am not your early adopter type.
Oh I agree entirely....again, I don't think Microsoft is going to sell many copies of Vista to upgraders....it will largely sell to vendors selling new computers.....it will drag anything other than "new-in-the-last-six months" or so computers to its knees from what I hear....I know they say it requires less, but Intel Dual Processors (better than Pentium D) and 2GB of RAM should be what one would need to operate effectively from what I am hearing.

Are you talking about running the Ultimate, Premium, or basic? Im am sure that I could run the basic and maybe the premium on a laptop that I have that's almost four years old....1.4 processor and a 1024 memory......When I loaded the Vista Ultimate on my mega laptop it was what some might consider slow until I went into start up programs and shut everything down that I did not use......Now it's just super fast......But the same thing would apply If you were using any OS.....I am always amazed at how many running applications people have going on their computers at start up that they don't need running.....I think there are alot of people who don't know how to turn them off......When I installed vista everything was checked in start up...There must have been fifteen or twenty things checked....Now I have four. And I can tell you that navigating this forum is So much faster using vista then it was with XP.....Things load so much faster....Also I have a single core processor on my newest computer the Dell XPS M170 and I stopped at eight different websites that I opened and it it was as fast as having just one open.....I think the duo core is just overkill for the average user.....I don't know to many people that have ten or fifteen websites or applications running at one time......

I agree that RAM is more important than processor speed....basically, many folks have Outlooks running, Spyware, IE or Foxfire, SPAM, Anti-virus at a minimum....does the new OS make it possible to not have these things running in RAM? If all these things are running (and some of these are RAM hogs like Outlook and Norton)...then plan on at least a Pentium D and 2GB RAM to allow for even the smallest amount of growth.

What is your physical memory usage with these "minimum"requirements running on Vista?

What you should so If you have not is go to Start/Run/ then type MSCONFIG/ then select....Selective startup and see how many things have a checkmark next to them......You actually only need three or four checked.....The less programs you have starting up the faster your computer will be......The services and I think it is called processes in XP lets you know what is running in the background.....You need to know what you need running to allow the computer to run all the other stuff you can stop....There are apllications you can download that will tell you what each one is and if you need it running......If you dont it will stop it and keep it from running next time you boot.....
I gave my grandmother my first PC...Dell XPST600 a whopping 600 MHz.....You can make a 600 mhz processor run faster then a 1 ghz processor by turning off all the crap that is running in the background as long as the 1 ghz processor has the crap running......

Do you know what you have running in the start up?

I just set up Outlook for the first time......Have it running now along with Windows Live One Care (That I like more then Mcafee) Microsoft Defender, SideBar, AOL, Playa Info, Photoshop, Skype, And the intranet from my work and I just cant believe how fast everything moves....Switching from one app to another is like a blink...Also the music on Vista sounds better then on XP....It's sharper and clearer but I would think that it has alot to do with ones sound card and speakers......
