Hi! I stayed there Mar 2005 with my three children for two weeks. It was pretty good, but it was also a first for us. I have heard the Maya has more to offer.
As for the beach I don't have any uptodate information, sorry. I'm sure someone here will have tho.
Good luck with your decision!
Belinda

If you stay at the Azteca you can use the facilities at Maya...

if you stay at Maya you can NOT use the Azteca.

I loved the Viva Azteca.. would go again !! There were lot's of kids there and there is always something to do and I believe there is a kid's club also.

have fun.

I stayed at the Maya two years ago and loved it. To me the biggest difference was that the Maya has more going on. Which is good if that's what you like. Also, the Maya has a swim up bar and the Azteca does not. The beach at the Maya is also a little nicer in my opinion. Both resorts are probably 3 stars out of 5 for the Playacar area. A good deal for the money but not exactly the Ritz. You'll have a good time regardless of which resort you choose.

Friends of ours stayed at the azteca last year and loved it. It is a smaller AI resort.

If you scroll down the AI forum page a bit, there is a two page thread with info on the Viva Azteca.

maya and azteca

Greetings fellow Canuck.
We have stayed at Maya several times.... have the membership etc etc.
Now owned by Wyndham. I would highly recommend you join the Wyndham by request "club" on the Wyndham hotels website. Its free and you will get upgraded "treatment" when you arrive etc.
Sadly, the beaches at both Maya and Azteca are in trouble. You've probably seen other posts on this. However, your kids are old enough to enjoy the ocean etc and will have a blast.
Regards
Mike
