Bartering..(correction)..Haggling

I'm usually quite good at bartering for stuff, and I find it quite fun and get a buzz out of it...but...my problem lies in recognising where it is acceptable to do it!

I think it will be easier for anyone replying to this to say where you can't barter

I need more details...where/how are you thinking of bartering?

I would think if both people are OK with it, then what's the prob? Maybe I am missing something...back to needing details

Well, during our nightly jaunts down 5th...my BF was eyeing something and she asked how much. Well, it was priced a bit high to begin with so she was going to pass. The sales lady then says VERY nicely....'Would you like to haggle?'
Other than that, we would always offer a lower amount and just see what happened. Mostly, it worked. Some stores have signs in them that say 'They do NOT give discounts' so don't even bother to ask.
The prices vary widely! and they sell the same things almost everywhere so shop around. I bought an item for $26. and it was going for $46. in another store a few blocks away. When I told him this...he says 'Would you like to buy another one for $25.?!' SO, in a matter of 2 minutes he went from a sell price of $46. to $25.!

Oh, and as far as actual bartering....you mean one item for another? I don't know where you could do that. What would YOU offer for the barter?

Once I offered to barter an hour's worth of consulting services for a Talevara sink. When the guy didn't bite, we decided to haggle instead. I think we both left the deal feeling okay.

I found that it was not easy to barter in Playa, it was really easy in Isla Mujeres though!

Sorry for the confusion....haggling's what I meant...I'd just been reading something else, and 'bartering' was the terminology they used!

As for 'where'...I was referring to shops in PDC

Alright then, well I have no advice...I don't enjoy haggeling. But anytime you wanna barter, I am a massage therapist

I think the general rule is stores with door and windows and A/C, no haggle...if prices are marked, no haggling,.....but stall or market type stores, or beach vendors, haggle away.

Start at half and meet halfway.

I like to haggle, they seem to enjoy it too- if you pay what they ask and it's way too much, they just laugh at you.

It pains me to say this, but I can't agree with you here, Riss.

On our last trip, I bought some relatively expensive jewelry at one of the "fancy" places on 5th. In each case, the price was marked and was lowered significantly.

If you're going to be in Playa during an Inter Playa del Carmen football match, you might be able to barter a City jersey to an local fan for an Inter Playa del Carmen jersey.

The man that ran the gift shop at the ruins in Tulum wore a Tottenham Hotspur jersey (which he has probably burned after last weekend) and of course, I saw the inevitable Beckham jerseys when I was there in December.
