Riu Playacar - just back

I have just returned from a week at Riu Playacar, our third trip to this resort and 11th to the PDC area. Everything at the hotel was great. The beach changed daily showing improvement each day. At this time, Riu Playacar is beach locked, you can not get past either Royal Hideway or Viva Wyndam to enable you to walk the beach. Both of those hotels are working very hard to save their hotel grounds. Lucky for Riu Playacar they had plenty of space between the pool/beach so you can enter the water and enjoy - not so in front of Viva or Royal. I counted 5 rows of palms that remain in front of Riu Playacar.

I've attached a few pictures taken on 2/7/07 if you'd like more I can email them to you.

Bring on the questions.

Thanks for the update. Show more pics. I leave Friday to the Playacar. How was the new Asian restaurant?

Thanks Sonny. Can you elaborate on what the other hotels are doing to save their hotel grounds (from your observation)? On Friday I contacted Viva Wyndham Maya, where we have reservations for the end of March. They replied quickly and were very gracious, indicating they're working very hard as well. I'm curious about details-- is it more than sandbags at this point? Thanks for your insights.

Re: Viva Wyndham Maya is in pretty bad shape. They have a more severe problem because the pool had been right on the beach. Their sand bags are black (bad) as opposed to the white bags that somewhat blend in with the sand. No one was going in the water in front of the hotel and most beach chair are on the lawn beside the hotel, the rest are at the pool. We did walk the grounds to get to the other Riu's, I will be honest to say it is very sad to see the area in front of Viva. If you look at the picture of the Riu stairs to the beach you see wall that was in front of Viva, we saw them spend the entire week putting in stone and sand to sure that up to stabilize the building at that end. If they continue that work maybe by the time you get there it will be more attractive in front. The water comes right up to the wall.

Sonny, do you have any idea how the beach in front of RIU Yucatan looks? Have you seen it while you were in Playa? We're staying at the RIU Tequila in May, so we're probably going to use that beach, am I right? Is that beach still ok?

And yeah, do you have more pics of the beach(es)? Please post them if you do!

Thanks!!!

We saw the beach grow between 2/2 and 2/9 by at least 30 feet. When we got there it was a drop off with rocks in the water, by mid week a sand bar was created by the surf, next day no sandbar no rocks just a nice little beach. So yes, they do change quickly. Riu Playacar is wonderful. It is a small 326 room, intimate, friendly service oriented resort - food was great.
Regarding the beach walks – I sure hope you can walk the beach by March. The problem is that the resorts on both sides of Riu Playacar have much bigger problems with erosion. Right now the Riu Playacar is ‘beach locked’ due to the tides and sandbags at the resorts on either side. It broke my heart to see the way those hotels managed the erosion. Normally, you would be able to walk, this year, not so

We did go over to the Riu Yucatan for a check. The beach was fine; it was small but there. You will be able walk south forever and north for a bit. Riu Playacar has 5 rows of palms before the water and a steep drop off with sand bag stairs to the beach. Riu Yucatan has fewer palms in front but no drop off. So you’re good to go. We considered moving to the Yucatan but didn’t because we had been there in Nov. 06 and found the dinning room services at Riu Playacar better. I only have more pictures of the Riu Playcar beach.
Enjoy!

Sorry, didn't check out that beach because beach walks to the North after Riu Palace are not even possible.
