If not an AI (RH)-where for =$?
I've been to Royal Hideaway three times, with big beach, little beach with big drop off and medium beach. But NO beach has me a little freaked out. And I know it can change in a week, so I know it can be back to acceptable when we go at the end of June.
But, I'm a planner and planning my vacations is one of my joys in life. This trip will be to celebrate mainly my husband's 60th BD and minorly our 28th anniversary. We loooove RH and have never been anywhere else where the service is so amazing with fabulous food and that unbelievably blue ocean. (Hint - those are our requirements). I really am not convinced there's another AI that can equal RH for those things (please tell me if you think I'm wrong). What I'm wondering is if there is a non-AI that is the same quality as RH where I could spend roughly the same $ for, once you include food and drinks (and I do like to drink on vaca)? |

I just returned from the Riu Playacar resort next door - I really don't think the beach at Royal Hideaway will be better by June - they have really made a mess out front with some VERY large sand bags. They did the really big ones, if the water does recede it will be a big mess. I think they screwed up big this time attempting a new method of saving the beach. I've been to this area many times and I was shocked to see Royal and Viva's attempts.
I've got pictures of the Royal building that was near the beach that is now in the water and the walls are cracking. They have poles wedged to stop the walls if they give away. If it were me -- I've give the Riu Palace a try or head to Secrets up the road a piece. |

Thanks Sonny. Can you post the pics?
I've done the Riu Palace Mexico and it does not approach RH in terms of food or service. My concern about Secrets Capri is 1) reports that the water isn't that nice to swim in and 2) they lost alot of their beach too (of course that was a TA review and we all know about those : )) That's why I'm considering non-AI. |

If I were you, and I was used to the surroundings of the RH and the service of the RH (I must say it is really fun to be well taken care of, isn't it?).... We had great service at EVERY AI we've been to....seriously. So while NOT possibly on the level of the RH, I'd wager most just below the RH scale come close enough...Having said that, I'd have Shammy hook me up with The Royal Playa Del Carmen (Royal Porto Real, formerly). I really like the look of the property, the location of the property, and the beach and amenities of the beach area. I haven't stayed there, but I would in a heartbeat. Plus, being on the North side of the Pier there, it has a great beach and the walk ALL the way North as far as you care to go is MUCH better than the Playacar resort area at ANY time.... |

Cuffed - I'm a nurse and when you spend your days taking care of other people, yes, it is reaaaalllly nice when you get pampered.
I met a couple at RPM last summer, and they stayed at RPDC in Dec. and one big complaint was the construction noise. Any idea if that will be done by June? Last edited by actran : 02-11-2007 at 03:01 PM. |

We've had SO many recent trip reports and reviews of the place and pictures posted forum-wise, but I can't remember much said about construction noise to be honest.... janied just posted one recently (with lots of nice pics, actually a combined Cancun/Playa TR) as has another younger couple who stayed recently...Shammy was there in early December (and I know you guys stay in touch resort-wise)...so I'll see if I can't do a couple of quick searches and link them here for you. I'll use the current and former name for the searches.... We were in the area in early December and were there on the beach in that area and walked by several times, if not almost daily and didn't hear noise to any large degree....I guess I've come to expect SOME noise no matter where I stay with all the renovations and growth, so if there isn't much I'm happy.... |

). And I have never felt as taken care of as I do at RH. But, the beach is what it is (or isn't as the case may be).I read janied's report (wasn't that the one with the trolls in all the pics? It was a great report - I could use a good trip report right about now, as I gaze upon the snow that has been in my front yard for almost 2 freaking months ).As I recall, when Shammy was there it rained constantly, which of course has nothing to do with the resort. But it wasn't the best vaca she's had. I just want it to be perfect for my hubby's 60th (especially since he started talking about turning 60 before he turned 59 . And he loooooves RH as well (and he doesn't even have to put up with weepy new moms all day) |
