we were there late Oct/Nov, enjoyed everything except for hotel zone in Cancun,
and the Mexican customs, searched most cases on the way in and all on the way out, 5th Ave in PDC at night is great, good food/drink and company, Yes I know that we were AI but why rush back for a meal when you are enjoying yourselves. The Rui Tequilla is a very good hotel, staff friendly and you can eat and drink in any of the Riu hotels (except the Palace and your evening meal) evening entertainment is good. no idea on the golf. but the days out to visit the Mayan sites were well worth the money, and we will go back |

We have just returned from a week at RT. Friendly people, good food, good entertainment, nice pools, rooms are simple but clean, grounds beautifully landscaped. The beach is a short or medium walk, depending on your age and condition, and very nice.
I appreciate James' reticence about All-Inclusives, but we booked at the last minute and it was the easy lazy way to go. Riu Tequila is a good value and I would go back. That said, make sure that you get away from the AI environment and into town. You'll see nice small private hotels on the beach or a block off, great restaurants and watering holes to feed and water the carcass after a day at the beach - elegant or cheap as your prefer, and a cool and funky tourist street on 5th Avenue. We dined at Ajua! and it was as good as previous posts say. Away from the water, at the edge of town, I got a great deal on primo tequila at Covi. Also, get away and south down the coast for one or more of the other cool places to visit. We did Xel-Ha and Tulum, but there are many other choices. If you're thinking of going to PDC, go now, because I fear that with time it will become more and more like Cancun and Cozumel. Before you go to PDC, surf this site and its forums. The site is exponentially better than any other for info on making your visit to PDC better. |

Jimbo - thanks for your info on the Riu Tequilla. We have a group that is thinking about going there over New Years. I know the Teqilla is not on the beach, but wondered how the swimming pool is? It looks awesome in the pictures. And our group is really looking forward to the swimup bar. So any informaiton on that would be nice. Thanks!

riu tequila pool
stayed at the RT about 1.5 years ago (october) and found the pool
very dirty and smelly, generally foul - particularily around the swim up bar. I have to admit I am a beach person rather than a pool person when down south, and probably somewhat biased. Absolulety loved the hotel, food etc, but not impressed with the pool. It could have also been related to the fact that during the first part of the week we had the effects Hurricane Keith as it blew just south of there and brought rain, wind etc...but smelly pool etc could be due to the fact that some people find it necessary to sit at the pool bar and never leave all day - I don't know about you, but don't they have to go to the bathroom periodically if you know what I mean?? (sorry it sounds gross )....I just have to wonder about the PH level around the pool bar :o |
