Saskatchewan storm...very close call this morning
Autumn's sister Heather was in town for a few days. She works for WestJet and needed to be back in Saskatoon for 6 a.m. this morning, so my son Maurie, picked her up at 4 and they headed out. Saskatoon is only a little more than an hour's drive from here, all on divided highway, so normally the drive is pretty uneventful, however, a winter storm rolled in last night with high winds kicking up the snow that was falling as well as the snow already on the ground. Just past the Borden bridge, a structure named after a past Prime Minister of Canada that spans the Saskatchewan River deep at the bottom of a tight valley, they hit a snow drift crossing the highway. It was right at the point where you crest the steep eastern side of the valley and you couldn't see it till it was too late. Maurie lost control of the truck and it hit the ditch sideways and rolled. Fortunately they were discovered quite quickly by a couple who were travelling from Edmonton to Winnipeg. Soon they were in an ambulance to Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon where they were found to be both a little shaken and sore but otherwise unhurt. We got the phone call a little past 5 this morning and I got in the car and drove into Saskatoon to get them right away, which with the conditions was a stupid thing to do but I made it there safely. I stopped at the accident site to grab a few things from the truck and helped the tow truck driver get it uprighted and out of the ditch then continued on. Finally found the emergency room in the hospital and saw Maurie sitting in the waiting area. Heather was still in x-ray so we talked untill they wheeled her out. Poor girl had to pee REALLY bad but the nurse wouldn't let her get out of the gurney until her x-rays had been reviewed. So there she laid, decked in a sorry looking hospital gown, parked in the hallway for all to gaze upon. After an agonizing wait of 5 minutes a nurse came by only to tell her that she would have to hold it longer because they wanted to have another look at her film
Finally, close to another 5 minutes later, the doctor came strolling down the aisle towards her telling her she was clear. I've never seen anyone rip off a neck collar and hop off a gurney so fast in my life. Boy the girl can move when she needs to With that taken care of we headed back home. I couldn't believe that both of them slept on the way back, I know I couldn't have. Here are a few pics. I got the tow truck to drop the truck off in the yard where I work so you'll notice in the background on of the fine Ready To Move houses that our housing division builds. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The last one is of Maurie looking into the back of what used to be his nice truck

OMG, lucky no one was seriously injured. What crappy luck!!!!!!!
Are you having the storm we are expecting here in Minnesota? I am starting to get nervous about traveling in this chitty weather. We have an hour and a half drive to the airport. Oh well, it's Minnesota, if you don't like the weather wait 5 minutes. Seriously, it's been almost 50 degrees all week and now this. |

Wow! Glad to hear they are OK... I have a truck just like that so it's nice to see that it held up quite well (at least I think it did, considering it was rolled) and that they were well protected. I had a scary trip back to Edmonton from Saskatoon this winter and then from Edmonton to Calgary last weekend... I hate winter!!!

Thank goodness everyone is okay. That truck is quite a mess. We are experiencing some of that storm here in Winnipeg but the storm is supposed to be worse west of us. A good friend of mine had to drive to Melville (Sask) this morning and I hope she is alright.
Supposed to get more snow tomorrow.
