Best/freshest ceviche
Barbj050 is looking for everyone´s opinions on where to find the best and freshest ceviche in Playa.
I´ll start it off with two of my favorites. I most always eat ceviche de camaron and La Cocteleria Veracruzana on Benito Juarez west of the federal highway is my favorite place to go for it. Mamitas on the beach also serves a VERY acceptable ceviche de camaron. Ceviche can be made from most any fish or seafood. One just has to try them out until a favorite is found. I would have to say that ones made from octopus are not high on my list. Now let´s hear from the rest of you. |

JAH, Ok I love ceviche, with whatever type of seafood it is made with, but for those of us that aren't totally fluent in Spanish, maybe you could let us know what the ceviches you mention are made from. Camaron is fairly well known, but I don't know the other by name. Can you help out.
:o Thanks Dougie |

For those who don't know what ceviche is....it is seafood prepared using a centuries old method of cooking by contact with the acidic juice of citrus fruit instead of heat. Ceviche is a popular dish throughout Latin America and there is some dispute as to it's actual place of origin. Some say Peru and others Ecuador. Some food historian's attribute the invention of ceviche to the pre-columbians, the Incas in particular, while others believe that it was the invention of Moorish cooks brought to South America as Spanish slaves.
In Mexico ceviche is marinated in lime juice and often has tomato, onions, avocado, and jalepenos or serranos added to it and is often seasoned with chili powder, garlic, and cilantro. There are many different styles and variations of ceviche. Below are some names of the various types of ceviche you can expect to find during your travels in and around Playa: Ceviche de camaron = shrimp Ceviche de caracol = conch Ceviche de pulpo = octopus Ceviche de pescado = fish Ceviche mixto = mixed seafood My personal favorites are ceviche de caracol and ceviche de pulpo. Though I also enjoy ceviche mixto as well. |

Denise,
Thanks as usual... I knew the ones you mentioned, but am sure a lot of others didn't. That will help a lot I am sure. The one thing I didn't know was the La cocteleria Veracruzana, which sounds like some sort of seafood coktail named after Vera Cruz... :o .. I am sure you will come to my rescue again on this.... Dougie |

Hi Dougie64
La Veracruzana is the name of a restaurant we love in Playa. They also have very good Camarones al Mojo de Ajo -- shrimp in a garlic sauce usually with the addition of some chipotle chile and lots of olive oil. Their seafood soup is also very good. Judy |

Judy,
I suspected that it might be a restaurant, but wasn't sure..You hit a soft spot with the Camarones al Mojo de Ajo...Couldn't remember the exact name, but is probably one of my favorite dishes in Mexico. As much as I order it, you would think I would remember its name... This is a restaurant we will definitely try...Thanks ma'am.. Dougie |

road trip
I had a yummy mixed ceviche with pulpo and fish at Los Pinos restaurant in Xcalacoco (next to coco's cabanas). It was the only restaurant open on that stretch of beach, and we were its only customers. Their prices were quite high, but the people were so friendly and it is such a beautiful spot...why complain? 8) It made me smile.

Yum, anything with lime, cilantro, and peppers is very acceptable in my eyes, and ceviche is at the top of the list. I like the shrimp-it seems firmer. The first time I tried it, I was in Playa, at La Tarraya, on the beach. Unfortunately, we returned home the next day, so that was the only time I had it in Playa. I have found it in Dallas, Texas at Gloria's (Yucatan-Mexican food). It is fabulous!

Last week in Playa I talked to a couple who lived at Las Palmas condos where I stayed. They gave me several restaurant recs, including El Tigre, which they said had the freshest and best ceviche in Playa. I did not make it to El Tigre, so I can't confirm their rec., but thought I'd past it along FWIW.
