What Are You Afraid Of??

I was watching 20/20 last night, they had a show about fear, and how irrational it is to be afraid of a lot things, like spiders, guns, flying, and on up the ladder to terrorism....

There were some interesting tidbids, such as:

Quote:

Terrorism is frightening — evil — and there are bad guys out there who want to kill us. But perspective matters. In the three months after Sept. 11, a study found 1,000 Americans died because they were afraid to fly, and they drove instead.
and

Quote:
Your chances of being killed, at present rates, by an international terrorist outside of a war zone is something like one in 80,000. It's about the same as being killed by an asteroid.
It got me wondering... what are you afraid of??

I am sure this sounds ridiculous but I am afraid of dropping my keys down the sewer. You know, you get out of your car in a parking lot, keys in hand and you are standing on a sewer grate. Makes my stomach turn thinking about it.
Wait, these were supposed to be irrational fears, yes?

Heights and centi/milliepedes....
And more recently....I've found I get extremely anxious driving through long tunnels (Freudians just keep a lid on it OK? ) We travel the PA Turnpike to visit family and I used to make the drive alone at anytime of day or night without hesitation. Now, I have to have tissues to wipe the sweat off of my palms when I hit the tunnels. Avoiding them is a two hour detour. I have to make the drive alone in two weeks.

I'm scared of those things too. I avoid heights so it's not much a problem and I hardly ever see any 'pedes.

Beautiphobia. The irrational fear of being too good looking. It's a horrible burden. Mind you, when our support group meets, that's an attractive bunch of people.

What I'm thinking is just how in the world can one assert such odds? Exactly what calculus machinations were observed in such extrapolations? That's what I would like to know. It would seem far more realistic and credible to stress a probability of one in a million actually.

And as for my greatest fear, why, fear itself of course. I hate it when the knees start shaking.

Heights, that's a fairly recent development and one I am working to overcome. Stick me in a mountain tram and I am pretty entertaining.

Also, after a near car accident years ago, I really hate passing other cars. Makes me nuts. Erik doesn't sympathize with this fear.

And the worst, as my parents age, I obsess about being without them. I know it hurts everyone when you lose a parent, but I'm not sure I will be able to handle it. And I'm not typically a weenie.

I think it is a burden you carry well, being the devoted man you are to the Mrs., with all those women throwing themselves at you!

They also say that the odds of the earth being hit by a very destructive meteorite are like 2000 to 1. The chances of winning the power bal arel like 2 million to 1.
