Sure it can be done. The question is would that fit with your friend's desires, expectations and style? Last year I went with a friend, and kept track of all our spendings. I averaged about $15/person for food and drink per day. Now, keep in mind that we drink very little (I think the most I had was 3 alcoholic beverages in one day... more typical was 1 marg with dinner). Our most expensive meal was about $40 for the two of us. We typically ate in little places not on 5th, once even at Walmart, kept things like fruit in our room to fill in the gaps, that kind of thing. That might sound like sacrificing and not very fun for you, but that worked for us, and suited our style just fine. If you are ordering a snack with every bucket of beer you have, you could easily come to $15 just for your mid-afternoon bucket!

On the other hand, my friend had a long list of desires for a hotel, and we spent $150/night as opposed to the little places away from 5th or the beach that you can get for $60. She would not have been happy with that.

well a liter of vodka is 47 pesos, 10 liters of orange juice is 38 pesos, food is really cheap at THE GROCERY STORES. I eat in , i stay away from the torist spots, and you can live pretty cheap. I was there for awhile so like thet say, living like you live there or living like a tourist, well i live there like i live in nova scotia, i cook my own meals and make my own drinks. I went to a few bars and if your going to them oftern add another 60 pesos, but generally 600-700 pesos a week is more than enuf for me, but again for me its living there, for the winter....

On Isla, the Posada del Mar hotel beach club - right across the stree from the hotel. It was two fer at the beach club all day, as I recall - maybe not for beer, but definitely for margaritas. Get to know Juan and Roger and they will take good care of you.

4 easy ways to save in Playa

1.)I have learned that the cheap breakfast places have lousy coffee, and Starbucks is $5, so pack a tiny, one cup coffee maker and coffee and make mine in the hotel when i get up. It saves both time and money.2.) I also buy a cheap styrofoam cooler and keep iced drinks in the room, and cream for the coffee. No food, it draws bugs and messes with your buzz. 3.) Of course, walk a few blocks away from the beach and save a lot on all you buy, especially in Playa where 5th Ave. has become relatively expensive.Which is not to say you should avoid 5th, C'mon it's your vacation. 4.)Best of all, learn Spanish, become familiar with the money and customs,(they don't like to give change), and shop where the Mexicans shop and you'll do great.
