$50 a day-can it be done?

So, we are leaving cold and frosty MN for paradise on Friday. Tonight, my traveling companion informed me that she is bringing $400 spending money for 8 days (4 in Isla Mujeres, 4 in Playa) Will she be able to eat and drink and rent a lounge chair on the beach, or should I stash a little extra cash in my purse? (oh, the joys of being the responsible older sister, who planned this whole trip by myself with exactly zero input....but I'm not bitter)

yes of course she can get by on $50 a day. I would lay in the sand and drink more though, skip the lounge chair.

Depending on what you want to do, I would stash some extra cash.

Stash some cash just in case and don't let her know. I have had travel companions like this. It can be done, if she budgets carefully, uses inexpensive transportation, hangouts out at beach places where the use of chairs are free if you eat and drink at the business. The good thing about Isla is there are several places where it is 2x1 drinks and beer all day. Go easy on buying souvenirs.

Just lie on a towel on the beach, buy a cooler bag with drinks and food from the supermarkets.

Eat on 30th Avenue and not 5th.

We found that tips, and taxis added up to a lot more than we expected, as well as drinks being on average 40 pesos each, except of course the beer. We bought vodka and rum at Walmart with mix, etc, and brought our drinks to the beach in our frozen mugs, but still spent at least 100 day for two of us. Oh, Canadian dollars, that is. I did buy a lot of souveniers, but I'm not including that in the daily costs. Of course, if I'd remembered that continental breakfast was included in our hotel we would have saved about 12.00 per day!
It's doable, though.

If she's budget conscious, she can do it! We had a family of three...and we didn't skimp on anything. We ended up averaging, over 10 days, about $160.00 day. We brought $2000,00 spending money and came home with a few hundred! That NEVER happens to us!

Any tips on places that have 2 for 1 drinks or good happy hours?

When you are on Isla...there will be signs all over the place. In Playa, what you can do is order a bucket of beer. You'll get six cold ones for a certain price. Usually it's a deal. I would head to El Pirata, or Bad Boyz for beer or drinks. Check out the Beer Bucket and La Ranita. Prices are good there as well. Another place is La Posada Freud bar.

It can be done. I think the 2 of us average about $120 a day. So that's about $60 a piece. (except for our night club nights).

2 x 1

Just remember that in Mexican beach resorts, 2 x 1 means you get 2 for every 1 drink you order. If each of you orders a beer, you'll get 4 beers, but get charged for 2.
