My wife and I have been visiting Playa since the mid-80s well before all this development occured. We are trying to get information on car rental and maps of Playa del Carmen.
We'll be arriving in Playa by ferry from Cozumel and want to first rent a car. Can anyone tell me what car rental agencies are closest to the pier?
Any suggestions on buying a map over the internet or elsewhere?

Definitely take the map advice from Chris and Rick...you can't go wrong with a Map Chick map! And, just like everyone else, I would love to see pictures of Playa from way back when...

Thanks for the many responses. I will take a look at our slides. I think that we probably have some pics of Playa from the way back. I can share one memory of 5th Avenue before the major renovation hit. It was really nothing but ruts with some asphalt scattered around. We were staying at the Maya Bric not long after it was built. Our friends Greg and Sally were building the Quinta Mija. While we were eating dinner at a tiny restaurant just down from our hotel we saw the strangest looking guy, must have been in his 70's, walking up 5th pulling a Samsonite suitcase with wheels attached to it...on a leash like a dog!
We'll be staying at the Maya Bric again for an evening before heading south to Majahual for a week of diving.
