They are really cute.
I saw one in PDC at the El Tukan in the central garden/courtyard there our first trip, it freaked me out, I couldn't tell what it was. The second trip we didn't see anything but cats.

Coatimundis are pretty cool too....we were walking into Aktun Chen and saw a group of them in the road. They look like big racoons crossed with armadillos, kinda.

The agoutis were everywhere at the Tucan/Quetzal the last two years. Like grey squirrels here.

I have stayed at the Riu Yucatan, and the place is crawling with them. The first time I visited the resort almost 10 years ago..it was a treat to see a couple a day...but after my last visit.....they must "ahem" like rabbits, because there were dozens of them. It was a morning ritual to toss fruit from the hacienda to them on the grass. They got to know us so well that when we would grab our seats in the mornig with our plates they would sit below our table and wait for fruit to be thrown to them.

Mexican rodent

I just got back from Playa yesterday & saw those animals too. The locals called it a "sereccy" (like Sir Ricky). One person told me they were Mayan - don't know if that was true or not.

There's one by my house that I think might be an alux!!! This might explain the trickery that has been occuring!

I think Agoutis have a bad case of the uglies..If I had seen one I know I would have been doing a table dance..
on our vacationI saw lots of iguanas at Tulum and I like them other than that never saw anything that freaked me out..
No monkeys sitting in a tree... No bats and no Agoutis.
I even did not see the no see ums that attacked my legs and shoulder..
Nothing like coming home with a not bad tan and wanting to show it off but can't because Pink Calamine lotion is hiding it

and...
just because the Agoutis hops I sure hope the kids in Mexico do not have to one of them deliver their Easter goodies...
