Scooters in Cozumel
How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Cozumel? We will only be going for the day to go snorkeling. Is this a good idea? How much do they cost, and where do you go to rent one? There are 6 of us, so renting a car might be hard....
Thanks |

It's been a couple of years since I rented a scooter on Coz. But we paid $20.00 US for the day. They have people on the ferry that rent scooters, cars, tour, etc. When you get to the dock there will be several people there to rent from. We had a blast riding around the island.

Renting a scooter in Cozumel and driving around the island was a major highlight of our trip, especially because my hubby isn't as much of a beach bum as I am and gets restless. He drives a motorcycle here so I felt very safe with him in charge. We rented ours for $30 for the entire day (this was last week), and it was better than the first offer from the guy right of the ferry for $50, we just walked into town a bit. It was the most wonderful experience, so cool and refreshing and SO MUCH FUN. We had no problems at all, we were just real careful and didn't speed or drive like idiots.
When you go, you have to stop at Paradise Cafe which is on the Atlantic Ocean side of the island just when you round the island. When we went, there was hardly anyone there, and the breeze was so gorgeous and cooled us off as we sat in the sun and drank our beers and watched dogs play on the beach. The view is breathtaking of the beautiful blue waves crashing over the rocks. Have a ball! |

Just a word of caution: take the scooters at your own risk! Some of the agencies have very specific instructions regarding where you are allowed to take scooters: some insurance is automatically voided if you travel outside of these guidelines. Not a problem unless you are a) reckless, b) have a breakdown, or c) take a spill (this past December we met some guys on scooters at Mezcalitos one of whom had taken a nasty spill on one of the many dips in the road on the east side of the island) - lotsa roadburn and bruises! You can get an open top car for around $30 US and get the open air - maybe a good idea if you plan to do a "bar cruise" as you venture out! Have fun in any case!

I really enjoyed doing the lap of the island, stopping off where I cared to. The cops were really sticklers about wearing helmets (even though they often don't on their motorcycles...) as an income generator, so wear it (mine wouldn't fit, but neither would the cuz's embroidered hat...)
Anyone that's seen the wedding pix will understand. I don't know if they still pull you over for that, as tactics seem to change often with the guys. Last time I was over there, I was with the owner of a dive shop from a popular beach. We got pulled over for some minor infraction, and the cop was all serious and official, and took the guy's license for him to pick up at the station with his infraction. The new police chief was in the passenger seat of the cruiser and my friend waved to him as we passed the cruiser. The license was immediately returned at the next stop, with apologies given. heheheh.

Scooters in Cozumel
I have to echo the amount of fun we had doing the scooter ride. Word of advice though start the day early, there are so many great places to stop and snorkel. swim and drink. Most places require return of scooters around 7:00 pm. Have a blast.

Yep, our place did. They were in the seat. We took them out, stuck our towels in there, strapped on the helmet, I had a backpack on, and away we went. My husband and I didn't mind wearing the helmet at all, even though I'm sure they screamed "tourist" because hardly anyone else had them on. But who cares. I needed a place to store the damn towels anyway!
I will review our videotape and find the name of where we rented ours (my husband took a shot of it, and then we filmed our tour of the island). The guy's name was Freddie and he was very cool and helpful. We chatted with him for a bit after we dropped the scooter off. The map he gave us of the island was helpful too. If we ever go back to Cozumel we're going straight to the same spot to rent our scooter for the day. |

Okay,
so this might be a really dumb question, let's say for example, you are driving along the road in Cozumel towards Chanakaab. Are there signs on the side of the road that scream "Come here and see me", or do you just take a chance and pull off at some random place? Also, if you find a good snorkeling spot or something like that, where you want to stop, do you just leave the scooter next to the road? Will anyone mess with it? Any detailed experiences are welcome! |
