I have always enjoyed good luck flying with ATA. And if their price drops and you call, they will give you a voucher off your next flight. Plus, did you see this new policy on their web site?
ATA Announces New, Flexible Travel Policy; Policy Allows Customers to Make Changes to Previously Booked Travel Itineraries in the Event of a Code Red Alert or Military Conflict INDIANAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 11, 2003--Customers who want to purchase airline tickets for future travel but are hesitant due to the to the possibility of a military conflict in Iraq can do so without incurring fees and penalties. ATA (American Trans Air, Inc.) (Nasdaq:ATAH) has established a flexible travel policy that waives standard re-booking fees for customers who wish to change their plans. This change is effective immediately upon the declaration of war or an announced "Code Red" by the Department of Homeland Security. "Our customers can feel confident that if they make travel plans on ATA and the international environment changes or a Code Red alert is announced they can postpone their plans without paying standard re-booking fees," said Don Moonjian, ATA Vice President of Marketing. "ATA responds to its customers by providing the support and flexibility they have grown to expect." This new travel policy applies to customers holding tickets issued prior to the start of a military conflict or Code Red alert. ATA's policy changes are as follows: -- Customers will be allowed to postpone their travel and apply the full value of the unused ticket toward the purchase of a new ticket, with no change fee, as long as travel is initiated within 90 days from the start of military conflict or Code Red alert. -- Customers will need to contact ATA prior to their originally scheduled departure and make arrangements to postpone travel. Future reservations will be subject to availability and applicable fare rules. -- Tickets purchased after the start of military conflict or Code Red alert will be subject to rules applicable to the fare purchased. ATA will continue to monitor the situation and make policy changes as necessary and appropriate. ATA is the nation's 10th largest passenger carrier based on revenue passenger miles. ATA operates significant scheduled service from Chicago-Midway and Indianapolis to over 40 business and vacation destinations. Since you are flying out of Minneapolis, I suggest you also check out fares at worryfreevacations dot com. They are a charter company, and on Tuesdays they post their Hot Deals for the week. Some of those prices are very good indeed.

First off, I'm in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and fly to Cancun on a semi-regular basis. The cheapest way to get there from here is on one of the three charters; MLT Vacations (aka Worry Free Vacations), Trans Global Vacations, and Sun Country. The last three trips, I used Worry Free Vacations because they were the cheapest and I could book online. I took the liberty of checking your desired date Thursday, May22nd and the price is $397 (including all tax). That seems to be the going price for the second half of April and all of May. For last minute travel, leaving in the next two weeks, I'm seeing prices at roughly $250 (including all tax). So, you could pay the current fare or gamble and see if the prices drop about two weeks before your departure date. By the way, the specials from Worry Free Vacations that start surfacing late Monday night, DO NOT INCLUDE the tax which is in the range of $100.
Locally, its difficult to book TransGlobal or Sun Country via the web, so you'd probably want to check with a local travel agent like Hobbit Travel. They are probably the most active agent in the state and they have a website where you can check their specials, which change daily Monday through Friday. Also, forget about using Northwest or Continental (or any other commercial carrier) to get you to the Cancun airport, even if you have frequent flyer miles. It takes about twice as long to get there as a charter (which goes direct) and you'll end up spending half your day somewhere like Memphis or Houston.
