I was a goalie my son and daughter were goalies thru college and we all still watch and love hockey, I must say that at this time Hockey is much more passive than 20 years ago, there are not nearly as many brawls and not nearly as many team enforcers, I think the reason hockey does not grow to the liking and proportion in the states as it does in Canada is the cost element for a child to start at 6 and play thru High School, remember, football and baseball you pay a small registration fee and the equipment is mostly supplied, hockey runs into thousands per season for a persons child to be on a traveling team here in the States with team fees, equipment, clinics and camps.

I love hockey too. Go to our minor league games here all the time. (GO ICE). What Simon did is the same thing that happens in other sports. Trust me there are alot of cheap shots in football that never get caught. The Simon incident was out in the middle of the ice for everybody to see. What about a 90mph fastball to the ribs on purpose. Thats the type of stuff that happens. Simons gotta pay the price. Hockey is great live, but loses when its on tv. Its too fast and the puck to little.

Here's a link to the Chris Simon incident, I hope I'm not breaking any rules here by posting a link.

Hockey is a Canadian tradition...its in our blood. Just because it is not popular in the US does not make it a fringe sport. It can't get a decent tv contract in the US.....Hockey Night in Canada has been a tradition in our house for as long as I can remember. Our daughter plays Ringette & will more than likely move to Hockey in the next few years. Hockey is a great sport & it is too bad more people are unwilling to give it a chance. Come up here & visit & I will take you to a Canucks game...... (bring Susie)

Stick and ball...yuck. In my sport, if it goes out of bounds, it's not coming back.
Rant over. I love high school hockey. Played it as a young man and work some games now. Pros jumped the shark when Magneson, Sanderson, et. al. left the game. Stan Makita, Orr, Bobby Hull, The Pocket Rocket. The guys playing now couldn't hold their cups. Give me the days of a player jumping out of the penalty box in Boston Garden, chasing some fan down the street, and beating the crap out of him. Ah...the days of old. This is, of course, my opinion.

[quote=Ginger]My hubby is a big hockey fan, HUGE football fan. (if we had NFL and college football closer, that would be his main ticket). However, he much prefers minor hockey compared to the NHL...he and our son have season tickets to our WHL team, the Vancouver Giants and he says he prefers this hockey not because of the level of play obviously, but because of the spirit involved on behalf of both the players AND the fans.
Minor league hockey is great!! We had a team here a LONG time ago and it was so much fun. Most of the players were from Canada and spoke french. It was fun to go to the games and especially to see the players and the kids interact with each other. The team played hard to win but never took it too seriously. They loved to play and the fans loved the games. As an aside, I ended up living with the goalie for about 2 seasons. We managed to communicate! He would always speak french when he called home so I never knew what he was telling his parents about me. He had great legs.... I love all kinds hockey regardless. Kids, college (men's and women's) and pro. The speed is fascinating. Last edited by Barb&Meg; 03-14-2007 at 12:15 PM. |
