Overdue Trip Report from Mexivoof & Mme. Dogma
You know you've been back from Mexico too long when you go out in the morning to walk the dogs, it's 21 degrees out (Fahrenheit!), and you think, "Hey! It's pretty nice out today!"
Pathetic. All because the sun is out and it's not sleeting. We've been back in the mud and dirty snow that is the upper midwest at this time of year. Mexivoof keeps bugging me to write a trip report and since I am an unemployed bum (by choice!) I have time. This will be my first attempt to post pictures, so please be patient! We took our two dogs to my brother and sister-in-law's house the night before. It's a whole lot easier for everyone if the dogs aren't here looking at me with those big brown eyes and trying to get in the car with us. My sister-in-law, Christa, drove us to the airport on Monday (Feb. 12) morning. The weather report called for cold and possibly flurries. Yep, the weather forecasters were right on the money again. It wsa snowing. Hard. By the time we got on the plane there were several inches on the ground already. What a lovely sight when you are leaving for Mexico! The only problem was that they had to de-ice the plane. We have never been on a plane that was de-iced before. Our departure was delayed by one hour. (After we got to Playa I was grateful it was only that long. All week we heard terrible stories about flights being cancelled all over the country. Getting there an hour later didn't seem so bad!) Here's the scene that we left in Milwaukee ![]() |

The flight to Cancun was pretty dull. Because of the bad weather, all we saw out the window were clouds until we got to the gulf. That was still better than watching that movie with Danny Devito and Matthew Broderick. A Christmas movie on a flight to Cancun? No, thanks.
Before we landed they passed out the immigration forms. I didn't know what to write in the space for occupation. The Friday before we left was my last day at the job I'd been at for 20 years. I didn't want to write "I have no job!" and I sure as shooting wasn't going to write "housewife". Why do they ask your occupation, anyway? What do they care? I toyed with the idea of writing "Nascar driver", "Chanteuse", or "Tightrope Walker". Let them prove I'm not one of those! Mexivoof had some excellent suggestions, such as "Social Miscreant" or "Unemployed Bum." Although I decided at last to be an Accountant on the form, for the rest of the trip - and indeed to this day - I proudly pronounce myself an "Unemployed Bum". (Temporarily) In spite of being cursed to stand in the longest line everywhere we went, we still managed to catch the ADO bus to Playa...with only 6 minutes to spare. We were surprised to see so much standing water along the roads. We later heard that there had been quite a lot of rain the week before we got there and a huge downpour that very morning. I love walking out of that bus station in Playa and being on 5th Avenue. What a great feeling. My favorite thing is to catch that first sight of the ocean. We turned the corner at 8th and proceeded to the beach where we were almost instantly met by the staff from Playa Maya to take our bags. We were greeted by many of the same waiters that we have seen for the past few years. It's nice to see the same people there. We checked into our room and were surprised when we were taken to the left instead of the right hallway. We always stay on the north side of the building! This was waiting for us on the bed when we got to the room: ![]() Mexivoof's birthday is on the 14th of February and they were all wishing him a happy one. Right away we changed into shorts for lunch on the beach. After only having eaten a dried up cheese and ham sandwich on the plane, I was starving and Mexivoof was thirsty. I always order the shrimp tacos as my first meal in Playa. But regardless of tradition, Mexivoof insisted on adding cheese to them. I gave in to Wisconsin Cheese Boy since it was his birthday week. After a few beers and Cuba Libres, it was time to get ready for dinner and our first Peep Meet of the week.

Ps
I believe the meat in the airline sandwiches was supposed to be turkey. Fortunately they had packets of mustard to give whatever some flavor, unfortunately the only way to open them was with things they no longer let you carry on an airplane.
