Greetings from RI!
Hi!
I am glad to have "fallen upon" this site. It just reminds me how much Playa has changed over the years. My first (of many) trips to Playa began in 1981 when 5th avenue wasn't even paved, and had 2 restaurants a couple blocks from the plaza. Believe it or not, on Saturday evenings, carts with games (like La Loteria, etc.) and snacks would set up in the plaza for Saturday night fun for the locals. There wasn't too much nighttime activity then! I only reminisce because I've enjoyed seeing Playa thrive - even if it has meant the loss of some of its original charm. I haven't returned in 2 years, so I imagine (and as I've read from this site) that it has grown even more in that time. Although the "peeps" scene looks like fun, I'm probably more geared toward some peace and quiet. A spot I have stayed in for years is in the Villas Arqueologicas - a collection of condos near the ruins on the other side of the Continental Playacar. Eating out will be a new adventure as well as there seem to be many new restaurants on the "strip." Thanks to all who submitted the tantalizing pics of food they've tried and recommend! One activity I hope is still happening is that the local Maya women used to gather on the north end of the plaza from around 6-9am with their carts of cocinita pibil and rellenos negros (along with their famous - and incendiary - habanero salsa) for the local workers to stock up with for their lunches. If you want to experience real Maya cooking - with not a hint of white rice and steamed veggies - get up and check out the carts. Plus they serve fresh-squoze orange juice at a fraction of what you'd pay down the street. Anyhoo, so much for intros. It's 48 days and counting, and I can't wait!! Regards to all! Enjoy your stay whenever it is. Playa is #1 in my book - and will probably always be. |
