Questions about my bill at Playa Maya

The wife and I just stopped in for a late lunch at Playa Maya, as recomended from so many of you. Lunch was delicious, although a bit expensive, over $100 pesos more than last night's dinner at Yaxche. The really disappointing part came when we realized the waiter grossly over charged us. We had Cerveci (100), Playa Maya shrimp (150) and Garlic shrimp (165) with 2 Sols (50 each, twice the price than at Mammitas). After a long morning sunning and Sol-ing at Mammita we didn't baulk at the $740 peso bill at first, until we realized that a simple lunch with tip cost almost $100 US!! By my calculations lunch should have been $515 pesos, not $740. When confronted, the waiter quickly returned $200 pesos, and in an attempt to stay in our vacation head, we took it and left. Walking back th our hotel we realized that he still overcharged us $35 pesos and the 25% tip on $740. Although the food was great, we left with a terrible taste in our mouths. Plays's been great so far but I wanted to get robbed in broad day light, I could have stayed in New York.

Hmmm..I have seen no history of this at all at Playa Maya and I stayed there before and frequent the restaurant regularly on trips down there....perhaps this was just a mistake?

Oh dear....We had an awesome lunch there Christmas Day....The best fajitas I have ever had & had no trouble with the bill at all... Very friendly & fun servers....Could it have been a mistake? Or a new waiter?

I love Playa Maya and have stayed there twice, and eaten there numerous times with no problems. I would guess this was probably just a mistake. Steve is great and would have quickly rectified the situation had he known about it.

If you're ever in the area again you should give them a second chance... it really is an awesome place and not at all a hotel/restaurant with a reputation of ripping people off.

Just my 2 cents

I hope you give them a second chance if you're in the area again. This is totally not what I've come to expect at PM.
I you ever have any concerns there in the future, ask to talk to Steve or Delmy, I have always found that they run a great place

We have eaten at Playa Maya many, many times, and have stayed there once. Steve runs a first class operation, and I cannot believe it was anything more than a mistake. A mistake that would have been rectified if you had asked management about it. Yes, the food is a little pricey, but always very fresh and very tasty.

Probably either server error or the server trying to slip one by. I am sure if you talk to Steve, he'll remedy the situation.

I guess I am confused. Before you ordered the "simple lunch" didn't you look at the prices? And unless I am not keeping up with the exchange rate, I don't know how you got from $740 pesos to almost $100 dollars. And I would also think that $50 pesos a beer is really for 2 beers as it was almost certainly happy hour. If Playa Maya is charging $50 pesos a beer they won't last long as you can buy beer around the corner for $10 pesos per beer. All this sounds strange to me.

Maybe the server accidentally charged for 4 beers instead of 2?

i agree you were ripped off. 50 pesos for a beer. i am increasingly turned off and blown away by this in the riviera maya. I call it americanized pricing. what can we get away with charging........ I'm not even going to start about the food prices menioned. i think i am the only one.

Is it unusual for the waiter to insist on cash only? When we were the last week for just drinks the Margaritas were $9 US each, but they were very big and good. Only problem was we thought they would take a card and were short on cash so we left without eating.

There are many places in Playa that operate on a "cash only" basis. It's always best to check beforehand if plastic is accepted. Many menus will show that they do not accept credit cards, by the way.

Beers cost 25 pesos at Playa Maya. Perhaps you are confused?

That's, like, 2 bucks 20 cents for a beer on the beach.

You can rest assured there is no conspiracy or organized scam going on at Playa Maya. Talk to the hotel management and figure it out.

I don't think the title of this thread was accurate, so I've changed it.
