slow laptop help!
Can anyone help with suggestions??? My laptop started running very slooowww yesterday. Can't figure out why. I'm not very computer savvy so any instructions must be basic. I did run my spyware program and that didn't make a difference. Grrr...

Here is a list of things you can try. I grabbed this off the net....
1.From IE, click Tools, Internet Options delete cookies delete files (offline files) clear history (set days to save to 0 if you want) click o.k., and Restart 2.click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools – run Disk Cleanup 3.Temporarily close Quick Launch: Right-click on the Taskbar, click Toolbars, deselect Quick Launch 4.Open My Computer right-click on C: click Properties click Tools, select Error Check (check all and fix), when finished click defrag & run. 5.click Start, Run ipconfig renew (type ipconfig space renew) 6.Restart. Right-click on Taskbar, click Toolbars, select Quick Launch to restore 7. Change your screensaver to blank. If you are using a complex screensaver, it can run in the background and eat alot of memory. All these things should be done regularly. The more frequently they are run, the less time they take. -Note: Games and videos are mostly graphics. Graphics create large files. If this doesn't help, you might need more memory. |

I'm not sure if this will help or not but have you tried running Windows Defender. Windows Defender caught a whole bunch of spyware/virus' that McCaffe(sp) missed. Might be worth a try. You can get it free from Microsoft. Good luck. I feel your pain.

If you have a rogue process working behind the scenes, it will really slow you down.
You can see what's going on in side your 'puter by doing a Control-Alt-Delete. This brings up the Task Manager. Click on the Processes tab. Then click the CPU tab once or twice. This will show you what's taking up your processor's time. Usually,System Idle Process takes up the most of my processor time. I found a third-party program, this way, that was installed by my router installer. Removed it, all was well. Good Luck! |

Hooray! It's fixed!!! Thanks to JimmyMn for all his help and to clean things up and thanks to the Frontier tech who figured out it was my Virus protection/phishing program that was the problem!
Thanks to all the computer people here who gave me suggestions...I will archive them but hopefully will never have to use them! Whew...after the computer wasn't working right, my hairdryer blew up and I still have to get out and shop as it's hubby's bday. What a day!

Glad to run you through the hurdles... just remember, your computer still isn't totally free of all the excess junk. One of these times when I'm in Apple Valley, you'll have to meet me for lunch and we'll add a couple tech tools to your laptop. Kind of figured something was blocking the winsock, so I guess it really was that update from McAfee that ended up being the culprit. Personally, I don't use software firewall crap. Simpler to do it all through a router and regain the speed benefits. Anyway, happy you're back in motion and now I'll be able to hit happy hour with Jan on time!!!
