Canadians living in the US--HELP
My husand is a Canadian citizen with a Lawful Permanent Resident (green card) and we applied for a passport from Canada Passport.. and have been waiting and waiting... I finally talked to someone from Homeland Security and Border Patrol and Customs and they said that he is "Exempt"...(doesn't need a passport, only his Permanent Resident Card) .............. is this true?????
Have you used your Permanent Resident Card to travel by air in and out of the US and have you had any problems???? thanks for any info. Julie |

So he's a Canadian citizen.
He's a US citizen (by way of green card) I would think flying from US to Mexico would be fine wiht green card. Canadian Passport requirements are Canadians flying/arriving INTO the US (plane, cruise ship, car). They are not for exiting the US. I would imagine that he would just show his 'green card' upon return. I took a look at he INS website, and it says this: International Travel A Permanent Resident of the United States can travel freely outside of the US. A passport from the country of citizenship is normally all that is needed. To reenter the US a Permanent Resident normally needs to present the green card (Permanent Resident Card, Form I-551) for readmission. A reentry permit is needed for reentry for trips greater than one year but less than two years in duration. So on one hand, it says a passport from Canada is needed, on the other hand it says the green card is needed for re-entry. But it doesn't say that is ALL that is needed. But I'm not INS...they have a hotline you can call for more info. Canadian passports will take ages to get now. They are backlogged because of the Jan 1 changes to this effect. No one does things ahead of time, everyone waits for the last minute to apply for their passports, and then they scream and yell when it takes so long becuase they are so back logged. ![]() |

Thanks Ginger for checkin
I have talked to The Canadian Consulate, The Mexican Consulate, INS and Customs and Border Protection.. everyone tells me that he CAN re-enter the US with his Permanent Resident Card (green card) the only problem he may have is with the airlines who may not be familiar with the ruling that this card is an exemption to the passport...SOOO, I had our travel agent call the airlines and they said we should not have trouble boarding at both ends. According to the Mexican government, they do not require a passport to enter or exit their country and this is a requirement of the US, she said, we want the US and Canadian visitors and put no restrictions on their visits...The Canadian Consulate said that since the Mexican government does not require a passport, we should not have trouble going thru their customes, and as long as the airlines lets him board we are good to go until we arrive back in the states, where the customs agent should be well versed in the passport exepmtions such as the LRP or green card... I called passport canada today and they have not even started on his passport yet and we set it on the 16th of January so I am assuming that is not going to be here in 12 days! So I guess we give it a try and if my hubbie ends up living in the terminal for awhile we will call Tom Hanks for advice. |
