Can you get life insurance?
StewartG's recent post about health care got me to thinking. Last year at work, our administration decided that it would be beneficial for all of my fellow employees to have a new test done instead of a stress test. We were on schedule to have a stress test every other year. It was decided that each of us would have an "Electron Beam Tomography" test done. Here is the companies web site, if you want to know more detail. http://www.123bodyscan.com/
Atleast one person has been denied Life Insurance because of the results of the test. His results were considered to be a minimal issue by Via Scan. The insurance company told him that anything other than perfect was reason to not insure. We, the dept members, are trying to figure out if we should continue to have this test done. I dont beleive it is mandatory. There have been a few cases where problems were found and operations necessary. It can help. |

We tried to get whole-family life insurance, for life, dismemberment, chronic disability, etc. (such as a bad accident that left someone paralyzed). First Jorden was denied (his heart). Then myself (RA, and some other minor things.) So we just went with life on John, and at first we were paying some hefty premiums. somehow John's doc painted him in a wonderful light, and he was raised three notches in the risk category...so he is insured and we don't have to pay too highly for it. He is type II diabetic and high blood pressure.

You are fortunate, Ginger. My DH is Type II as well - very well controlled (minimal meds and normal blood sugar) and no other issues (non smoker, rarely drinks, not overweight). We have not been able to get life insurance for him that wasn't OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive so far except through the group plan at work - which I guess is better than nothing. We were just plain turned down for mortgage insurance. Maybe I should look around a bit more!

I'm a Type II too
, with hypertension - the first controlled by exercise and diet, the latter with medication. I have life insurance - had the hypertension when I got it.It is through a union program, not exactly work related and definitely not the employer program. |

He was attempting to buy insurance from a private company, in addition to what he has available through our employer group policy. When he applied, he signed a paper allowing the insurance company to get his medical file from his personal physician. The results of the EBT were forwarded to his physician and in his file. He was told by Via Scan employee that the scan showed minimal calcium buildup in his cardiovascular system and no real problem at this time. Insurance company told him that any result from this test other than a "zero" would exclude him from their life insurance. Dont know the insurance company name.
Question - Should you get an annual physical? YES, I beleive. However, What are the consequences??? |
