The Norwegian west coast autumn 2006 • Trip report

This year my son Martin is going to Nordmøre folkehøgskule. Its a "Folk High School on the Norwegian west coast. The school is in Surnadal where is between Molde and Trondheim. He has a great year. You may read about the school here.

On September 30 Kari and I went on a three days trip to visit Martin. We went from Drammen and Oslo past Lillehammer and through Rondane national park and Dovrefjell national park past Oppdal and to Surnadal.

From Surnadal we went to Molde. There we went over the fjord and drove to Geiranger where we spent a night at Union hotel. From there we went over the mountains back home.

I posted this thread to show you some of the pictures we took.

It is a 8 hours drive to go from our home to Martin's school. So we didn't stop to take a lot of photographs. But here are some from the trip.

Norway is a country with lots of mountains.

We had to stop to get something to eat, and the rømmegrøt was great at this place.

Driving through Rondane national park. But to really see the mountains you have to walk. A three days trip would be fine.

We had to take a ferry befor reaching Surnadal. The autumn weather was great.

Kari and Martin outside the school.

The students had a show that night, and Martin played the bass.

There wasn't any room for us at the school so we stayed at the Surnadal hotell. The next morning we said goodbye to Martin before living. Going from Surnadal to Molde and from there to Geiranger we had to take 5 ferries because of the fjords. The pictures I most wanted to show you are from this trip. Geiranger is one of the most famous fjords in Norway. The cruise ships goes all the way to Geiranger. Since 2005, the Geirangerfjord is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Leaving Surnadal.

We were driving east. The first ferry and the first fjord.

A cup of coffee and some lefse on the ferry.

Then going south we came to Molde where we spendt one and a half hour before taking the next ferry. This is Molde seen from the ferry.

The fjord here is quite wide.

Driving to the next ferry. I like watching the mountains.

Fjords, mountains and tunnels. Do you see the road in the background alongside the fjord?

And to cross that fjord we had to take a ferry.

The ferries are quite small.

And this is the Geiranger fjord. Its a pity its out of season for the cruise ships or we may have seen one of them here. This is fare from the ocean.

This was very off season and not many tourists on the mirador.

This is the way to the ocean and where the cruise ships are coming from.

The view from our hotel window was great!

Sun down from our hotel room in Geiranger. No pictures could do this trip justice. And after all I was driving moste of the time.

*wow* Have to go to Norway one day... So far I've only been to Oslo but I probably should see more of it. The pic of the sky mirrored in the fjord is just great!

As I wrote this was very off season in Geiranger. Its more beautiful in summer when the trees and the grass are green. One of the hotels closed the day before we arived and the restaurants with the fjord were closed. The souvernir shops had their last day and we were the only costumers. At the Union hotell we were the only guests besides a bus load with Japaneses. And when we came to breakfast at 9 am they had left. So we had the breakfast buffet to ourselves. And it was a large buffet with lots of everything.

This picture was taken out of the window the night we came.

After breakfast we went for a walk down to the fjord.

This is Geiranger hotell and one of the restaurants. All was closed for the season.

Kari and a Norwegian Troll.

The road from the fjord to our hotel was steap and had sharp bends.

On our way up to the mountains. Our hotel is down at the left side of the picture.

We had to try the old road to get this picture.

The Geiranger fjord is behind the first hill.

I used my tele zoom to take this picture. Here you see the road we came down the night before.

I love watching waterfalls.

It was cold in the mountains that day. October 2 and fall was really there.

Do you see the glacier in the background? We drove this narrow road to get a better view.

Here are signs telling where to walk if you are hiking in the mountains. There are self served houses with food and beds.

This was the last picture from this trip. Thank you for watching.

Brings back a lot of memories though I didn't go to all these places. Norway is a very beautiful country...too cold for me though. Just last night I was talking about the first time we had fiske-bolle.

Yes I agree. Martin is using most of his time to music this year, but they have lots of time to open air activities.
