Prayers for your friend's son, Angel. Yikes, his parents must be going through the full gamut of emotions on that one.

Update on Paypal Account

We now have a paypal account set up specifically to accept donations for Alex & Mayte's recovery. To donate via paypal, go to www.paypal.com and click on the "send money" tab.
The paypal email account set up for this fund is:
helpthechicas@google.com.

Of course, you can still donate via our website by clicking HERE (just note in the notes field that it's for Alex & Mayte) or drop off donations at the hotel.

Our grand total collected from this and another website, along with dropoff donations, is $1360.00 US. Thanks to everybody for their generosity! But please don't stop giving. The girls are going to need a lot of help over the next several weeks.

We saw Keith yesterday and he told us that Mayte was going to require a daily nurse for quite a period of time. She has to stay completely immobile for several weeks. Alex should be coming home in the next day or so and will also need after care. When Keith started talking about people's generosity and the help the family has received, he began to cry. These are good folks, and they continue to need our help.

Some of our friends have gotten together here and will pay for Keith, Mayte, and Alex to have a woman who will work in their home full time for at least a month, possibly more. She will help with caring for the girls and will also clean, cook, etc.

I heard yesterday that Alex will be going home today.

SarahB and I got together on Friday night and brainstormed a t-shirt to sell for the Chicas. Sarah is super talented and they are going to look great! She sent in the order, but with it being a holiday week, they aren't in production yet. I'll let everyone know as soon as they are ready to sell.

support

Dear Heather and crowd,
Have been away for Easter break and was shocked to hear about Mayte and Alex's accident. I myself have been on the receiving end of this amazing, generous community and will be happy to help out...
Cooking for them is no problem, just let me know for what days and what kind of stuff... Also I have a car so if that comes in handy...
Are they in need of any particular types of medicine? We could ask Claudia Hurtado to coordinate that...
I send them best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Update on Chicas

Thanks again to all the generous people who have made donations for Alex & Mayte through our site and paypal. So far we've raised about $1900 US in donations ranging from $10 to $200. THANK YOU TO ALL!!!

There are still lots of bills to pay. Alex left the hospital yesterday but could only be released after her hospital bill of over $140,000 pesos (about $14,000 US) was paid. Thankfully, a local friend stepped in and paid the bill until the girls could raise the money themselves. So the girls are both home but still need care and living expenses. Neither girl will be able to work again for quite some time. Mayte is supposed to stay immobile for many weeks, and Alex is still recovering from major surgery.

Heather and Sarah have put together some really cute "chicas" shirts and will be selling them soon we've been told. However, in the meantime, please continue to give whatever you can via our website or the paypal account.

On a personal note, we'd like to remind the Peeps who attended either of the Luna Blue Blender & Burger Bashes during Peepstock or Peep Fest that these were the delightful girls who grilled your hamburgers. If everyone who attended either of the parties bought "an imaginary burger" or two...that would help tremendously.

Thank you again for supporting these girls.

For those that would like to see, there is some great video of Mayte and Alex having fun and looking beautiful over at the Luna Blue Bash on this thread.

Our thoughts are with them that they'll be once again enjoying life to the fullest very soon.

I went to see Mayte and Alex at their house at around lunchtime today. They both seemed in pretty good spirits, I think it has helped a lot for them to both be in the same room with each other and know that each is going to make it. Poor Mayte is so bruised up, just painful looking. We joked that her skin color in spots make her look as if she is Mexican, black, and Asian.

Alex can walk a bit, though she is still very sore from her splenectomy. It is just going to take time and patience. Mayte is already going crazy with just having to lie there, and she has at least one immobile month to go.

Although it will take a long time, I was delighted to see that these girls are still the same loving, fun, uplifting souls. Their bones might break, but nothing, and I mean nothing, can crush their spirits. They inspire me.

Agreed. Heather, it's obvious even to a newcomer like me that you are very often the well from which many good works spring. Seems to me you do way more than help people with their travel plans -- you are really a pillar of the Playa community!
