VT 4/16/07, 9/11/01 the irony
Students, parents, facualty at Virginia Tech. I am an olde fart, and have no idea how to blog you, but I know Google picks this up ... here is my story.
On the day of the hijackings we were driving from our friend's house in Cleveland to the wine country of Virginia. Our first over night was at a B&B in Amherst. We were still in suburban Cleveland when we heard that a plane crashed into the WTC. This had been a standing joke with us since John Denver was killed in a plane crash when we were in London and the John Kennedy Jr. saga happened while driving home from St Louis. We just figured it was another wayward Cessna and hoped that no one was hurt on the ground. As we drove across PA the magnitude of the situation became known; we drove within miles of the plane that crashed there. We were driving down I-81 on a beautiful late summer afternoon on the back side of the Blue Ridge hearing all of the horrible events of the day. Finally I convinced my wife to turn off the radio and put on some of the jazz CDs we brought along. It was a beautiful drive leaving the highway at Lexington and crossing the mountains into Amherst. The owner of the B&B was astonished to see us, he didn't know we had driven all the way from Milwaukee. At the B&B we finally saw the tape of the horror that happened that day. You Virginians were the best hosts we have ever had, not only in Amherst, but also Charlottesville and Culpepper. We raised a toast to you at dinner tonight. Once more ... "Here's to the friends and family of all those who perished needlessly in the Blue Ridge yesterday" GO HOKIES!!! |
