Acapulco and Earthquakes

I am headed off to Acapulco, for work, this Saturday. Last week, they suffered a 5.7 earthquake and the aftershocks are still going on. I have done hurricanes (3), tornados, blizzards, and floods, but never a tremor. Kind of have a fear of them, to boot. Everytime I am in DF, I get antsy.

Anyway, wish me luck. Shaking ground or not, I have to go.

Experiencing Earthquakes is kind of freaky. The last one I felt was the big one in 87 or 88. I hate the feeling of disorientation when quakes happen. I wish you luck.

Good luck. I've been through several small ones in the New Madrid fault zone and one here in Oregon that shut down the Washington State Capital for quite some time while they repaired damage. I think some of our Californians have been through much worse.

Get in a doorway, under stout furniture, or roll outta bed pulling your mattress on top of yourself - I think those are the recommendations.

Yes, I think I was in shock when I saw clips of all of the freeway damage and the Bay Bridge upper level collapsing on the lower. Freaky indeed.

I was living in Santa Rosa in the magnitude 7.1 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake....I remember the parking lot looking like waves in an ocean and the cars rocking back and forth on their transmissions...horrible feeling....

Best of luck PDS...have fun....and don't worry...when its one's time it just is....make the most of each and every day!

Yes. That is exactly how I felt. Very weird. My dog was looking a little loopy too!

That made me laugh in a real sick sort of way

I would worry about construction in Mexico during an earthquake...I don't know how well stucco holds up to bending and moving. We have had quite a few in the Pacific Northwest but because most construction is wood or steel, it will move somewhat. Most new buildings (not homes but business) have standards they have to meet now for earthquake capability.
Anyway, hang on and just go for the ride....it will feel sort of like a bad drunk

I've been trough about 4 or 5 earthquakes here in Iceland, and here its either go out side the house (if you don't live where there are high buildings) or stand in a doorway. Never put things on top of yourself, that's not a great idea.

Anyway,
good luck PDS.

"Disorientation"??? I'd be more concerned about something large FALLING on me!!

I've never experienced an earthquake and hope I never do! If I do ever experience one, I sure hope I have an extra pair of pants with me!

**looking at the long, narrow shelves along the tops of my living room walls full of shot glasses in my non-earthquake prone home in Massachusetts **

Doorway - Bad idea. Swinging doors have a tendency to smash things like fingers.
Under Stout furniture - Good
Roll out a bed - But leave the mattress, just cover up some other way. If the walls collapse the bed will help keep the ceiling off of you. Ask the people that were on the 1st floor of the 3 story apartment that became a 2 story apartment in the Northridge quake. Some that lived were found next to their beds.

Oh yeah, we were in Northridge during the quake. Quite a ride.

As bad as Hurricanes can be (and I have been through several) - I still think I would take them over a earthquake. At least you have some sort of warning with a Hurricane.

Travel Safe PDS !!!! Take some pics for us !!!
