Sangrita Recipe (Mine . . . and yours?)
A recent tequila thread that mentioned sangrita (NOT that red wine stuff, that's sangria) got me thinking . . . some folks have tried fine tequila and never had sangrita alongside and some folks may have had the sangrita someplace and then got home with that expensive bottle of tequila and wished they knew how to make sangrita. (Face it, the bottle stuff is just crap and not wiorth sharing the table with your good tequila.) Like they used to say . . . I'm here to help! (And if others have their own recipes or if people want to give feedback, chime in!) Here we go . . .
Get a small can of plain tomato juice, those little individual serving size cans. Pour it in your blender. Fill that empty can with fresh squeezed orange juice and add that to the blender too. Add one slice of a white onion (I slice fairly thin, but feel free to experiment.) Remove the stem from one serrano chile - depending on how spicy you like your sangrita, remove all or some of the seeds - I usually go for about 1/3 of them - and toss that in the blender. Add the fresh squeezed juice of one large lime (the Persian variety - if you are using the smaller Mexican limes, use more). Add a pinch of salt (and I like a couple grinds of black pepper). Run the blender on high until all trace of the "chunky" ingredients (onion and serrano) are gone. I chill mine (do not add ice) and it will keep about 4-5 days in the fridge. Saludos! |
