Inexpensive hotels in Cancun?
Not exactly related to Playa, but does anyone know of any decent and unexpensive hotels in the zona hotelera of cancun? I need to stay in the area for at least 15 days while I visit the hotels and drop off my resume and look for an apartment to rent.

I rather doubt you're going to get much input on your inquiry here, Fryman. The generally held opinion in this neck of the woods is that the best look at Cancun is one in the rear view mirror. Not that it's a bad place, it's obviously hugely popular, and its beaches are marvelous, just not many boosters frequent this forum, and those that do tend to be customers of the larger resort properties and AI's. There must be a similar site that concentrates on that town though. They generate many times the number of visitors we see in Playa, so it just stands to reason Cancun's enthusiasts will require such a platform. Sorry I can't offer any suggestion other than the usual search engines, like Google maybe?

In the Hotel Zone, the cheapest places are on the lagoon side. The Holiday Inn Express and Best Western Clipper Club, come to mind. On the ocean, Suites Solymar are relatively inexpensive, and come with kitchenettes. For job hunting, I would suggest staying in town, near the entrance to the Hotel Zone, with easy access to the bus.

Fryman, try the Grand Royal Lagoon. Its about $40 a night in low season. Yes it sits on the lagoon, but it is right in the heart of the hotel zone. We have stayed here a couple times years ago. Its a decent place. Those prices are current prices too.

Why the hotel zone? You can stay much more cheaply in town and take the very inexpensive (and easy) public bus out each day. Your accommodations will be much nicer for less money, usually, and it doesn't sound like you'll be needing the view/beach since you'll be so busy. I doubt you'll be looking for an apt in the hotel zone, either, right?
However, if you must, everyone is right that the lagoon area is cheaper. Imperial Laguna has kitchen units as well, if you want to save even more money with a Walmart run for food instead of restaurants. I almost always stay in town at the Terracaribe on the corner of Bonampak and Lopez Portillo for less than 500 pesos during off season. I suggest you try the hoteldiscounts website to find the lowest prices. (watch the date function carefully though as it always changes the ones you enter!) PS: Bumper, I actually like Cancun and I've never stayed in an AI there! Just have to avoid the parts that don't appeal, and focus on the beautiful ones (beach, people, food, etc).

Or hop the ferry for $7 US and take the thirty minute ride to Isla Mujeres and there are many places for the$55 - $65 range. Be forwarned that life in Isla Mujeres is a bit slower than Cancun! Take a look at some of the many sites.
Good Luck on the job thing
