Canadian allegedly assaulted in Cancun
There was another report last night that a man was assaulted at the Moon Palace in Cancun on Tues. Apparently he was walking back to his room from the nightclub on the property and was attacked. He is in a coma in the Cancun hospital with head and bac injuries. So now the government is warning Canadians again that Mexico is a dangerous place for us and we shouldn't travel there. I feel badly for the guy that is in the coma but I just wonder what the circumstances were before he was beat. Maybe I'm just naive, but I have put myself in precarious situations before (young and very naive) but I have never found myslef in the position of being fearful that harm was going to come to me. Unfortunately, I feel there's more to the story and though I don't condone what happened as far as the assault, I feel tourists in general should be very respectful to the locals and I have found that sometimes that is just no the case. On the other hand, there is assaults here in my town almost every day and night. Tourists to my town are no exception. I just hope the government doesn't take it too far and make it hard for us to come to Mexico. Just my thoughts on the subject. What do you think?

I'm in a town of 3,500ppl, 3 bars in town, there's fights every weekend, broken fists, noses, whatever, some get cut or broken and go to the hospy, should the federal government put out a warning for Vanderhoof, and no one should come here?
Not trying to blame the victim here, but how clean was he in the interaction, was there an altercation that took place in the bar and they went outside to settle things? The details don't matter, the media is wating for anything to stir up whatever they can against Mexico. |

The guys in the smoke room here at work brought this up to me this morning.....they were saying, "Jeez, aren't you glad you got back here safely?", just ribbing me though, they know it's kind of silly.
I think most people know the Canadian media has got a hold of this angle and is worrying it like a dog with a bone. Tourists have always died on vacation in Mexico, drownings usually though,or heart attacks or other accidents. There has been an increase in the number of foreign visitors who are victims of seemingly random violent crimes, that is the difference these days. And yes, when going to certain areas it IS and should be a concern. But it is still a drop in the bucket of total visitors, so....happy travels. I am not worried about the gov't preventing us traveling there, how could they? There isn't even really an advisory is there? Just warnings about the drug cartel related violence in certain states, like Guerrero (where Acapulco is) and Michocoan (spelling?). And we still went to Guererro in February. *shrug* We were just a bit more cautious and on our guard than other trips, maybe. |

What do I think?
One word 'Virginia'. Dare we go the US? Yes, because it's not Baghdad and neither is the Riviera Maya. I hope this man recovers. I hope this doesn't turn into a hysterical 10,000 post thread. |

with the tourist population of Cancun, it could just as easily be Americans Canadians, or Europians. Just a thought! |

In the two articles I've found, it's uncertain whether he was beaten/assaulted or simply fell. The family maintains that he must have been beaten, but no one saw anything. He was found on the grounds by security, and they don't know for sure if he simply fell and hit his head or was beaten. According to the report, he was partying/drinking throughout the day and had also possibly been doing drugs. Toxicology reports are pending.

Moon Palace is so big...it doesn't surprise me that the possibility of it being another guest isn't outrageous. They also have cameras everywhere....they'll hopefully find something out soon. The guy (according to local news) in on life support and medically induced coma. Not great for those of us who love Mexico hunh?
(btw...murder #12 last weekend in our town..maybe we should ask all tourists to not come here either?)
