Pet friendly hotels?

Are there any hotels at Playa where I could take my small dog? (cocker)
Are there any decent parks or places where you can take a dog, since it seems they are not allowed at the beach?

We have stayed at the Pension San Juan on 5th Ave. with our black lab and felt very welcome.

Take some poop bags with you. There aren't a lot of green spaces in Playa, and you need to be able to clean up after your pet.

And, yes, it's against the law to take your dog to the beach.

That sucks. I am amazed of all the open spaces here in Vancouver where you can let your dog run free and have fun. Never understood why Mexico doesn't have any decent parks anywhere. In Cuernavaca, where I used to live, there is one lousy park. Ugly as can be, has more cement than grass, and they charge you to get in.

Greed and corruption. The developers won't make any money out of a public park. Why have it when you can build 200 houses and make a killing? The city officias don't know the difference since most people grew up in tight places. As a child I grew up in a very nice neighborhood with a beautiful park across the street (in Guadalajara), but sharing 2 walls with neighbors. Very few detached houses in Mexico.

Don't expect to see that many parks in playa now that land is getting scarce.

Run a search, this topic has been discussed a few times and I know there are quite a few pet friendly places.

As far as not allowing pets on the beach....believe me it's a good thing. I'd love to take my dog to the beach, but thanks to the many inconsidered people who don't pick up after their dogs. I rather have that rule implemented than having to watch every step I take on the beach.

I did run a search for "pet friendly" and got loads of unrelated stuff

I see your point. Only real way to do that would be to have big fines and strict enforcement for people who don't pick up. But if you can get out of a speeding ticket by giving the cop 20 pesos I'm sure no one would really get fined for not cleaning up after their dog.

I always wondered why you would take the most biodegradable shit in the world and put it in a plastic bag so it will be around in 1000 years(not very green)but i do agree just pay the cops, and if anyone steps in shit they can just right it off as a good deed for the animal shelter.

If you are caught on restricted beaches with your dog they will confiscate your pet and take it to the pound, where you will have 3 days to pay and get it back .

Does someone actually police the beaches?
And aren't there any non-tourist areas where you can take your dog? I sure wouldn't take it to the beach in front of the Porto Real, but there must be somewhere you can take it.

Well this is not advice, mind you, but an easily enough verified observation is that that implementation of the prohibition of dogs on the beach a few years ago had the (presumably desired) effect of keeping some off entirely, but also the (presumably not precisely desired) effect of "pushing" other dogs and their owners to the non-prime hours on the beach, especially quite early in the morning or rather late in the afternoon.

You can make of that what you will. Act responsibly.

Incidentally, I forgot to add that I wholeheartedly agree with your lament re the lack of parks around here! In fact, that's about the first thing that comes to mind and that I mention to people when they ask "what do you miss from home?" There's a real dearth of green space, and as you note, the approach to many public parks is to pour cement over most everything just to get started. I particularly note this because of my kids, I guess, but if I were currently a dog owner, I might have another reason to note it.

To my knowledge there are only 2 beaches that will allow dogs , that may change due to new developments... Xcalacoco beach and the one out near Xpu Ha there may be others further down the coast towards Tulum, the tourist police drive up n down the beach on small quads and apparently the dog catcher does sweeps.. .
