perfect car for playa?
Taking in consideration terrain, gas prices, insurance and maintenance costs, security...in your opinion, what would be the perfect car to take to playa?
We are planning on moving there long term in august from vegas and planning to bring a car, probably a used nissan xterra, and want to hear your opinion on the practicality of having such a car there or any recommendations you might have - thanks! |

Lol! Thanks to the advice we have received from u and other members in our prevous thread I was able to weight the options and do specific research on financing.
I know now (thanks to the forum) all equal, cars are 5-10 thousand dollars more in mexico, so we are definetely not purchasing a car down there. We also know now that if we get a letter from our financing company permitting us to take the car to mexico and a copy of the title we would be ok. (Still need to get all this confirmed in paper from finance company before we trade in my car for an xterra) The mini is to small to fit all my family when they come to visit and the audi is too expensive to repair if it gets dented or scratched, and thanks to the forum we now know most drivers in mexico are uninsured so we would most likely be 100% responsible for all repairs. See how helpful u guys are? Thank you! |

I keep saying that as soon as I win the lottery and buy my house down there I will also buy one of those 4 door Jeeps they came out with this year (they are a wrangler unlimited I think is the model) Anyways those look cool and can have a soft top which for me would be essential!
Just my dos pesos...which is all I have or I would be moving there too! |

I know there has always been issues of bringing a car bought in the states if you intend on licensing it. Don't have the specifics, but it seems people were having to take it out of the country, and then bring it back every six months.

My 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser has been a great all around perfect (for me) vehicle in Playa. The Toyota dealer in Cancun has yet to get their first one in - but they will soon. Have noticed two others around Playa last month - now there must be three in the whole Yucatan
. The FJ performed flawlessly pulling a 12 foot fully packed cargo trailer 3550 miles from South Dakota to Playa in December. At times, on US highways, I hit speeds above 80 mph and had to look in rearview mirror to see the trailer because FJ pulled so effortlessly . Tommy, the only headache that I had on the trip was my "back seat" driver |

I wanted a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser when they first came out but we test drove it and I felt trapped in because the windows are small, however, the exterior is so cool.
I also love the Honda Element, but since it only sits four it will not work for us, we need that extra seat when my family comes to town to visit We have narrowed it down to the Xterra, the Honda CRV and maybe the Pathfinder. I am trying to get my husband to try the Ford explorer but he wont bulge Thank you all for your help! |
