Smoking Ban in UK
Just as a matter of interest to anybody planning a trip to England.......as from July 1st 2007...there will be no smoking in ANY public places .... that includes..hotels.bars,pubs,clubs,workplaces,cinema s, and taxi cabs ...etc,ect...!...as an ex smoker myself it won't bother me, in fact I will be quite relieved..no more smokey atmospheres in pubs and restaurants......but it will be very hard for people who do not want to give it up. Apparently there will be a fine of £50 on the spot...about $100...or...£200 $400..if taken to court!.....I really can't see how they can police this ....it will cause quite a lot of problems I think....ah well it will be interesting to see how the public will react!

Yeah, i have mixed feelings towards this..... I am a smoker myself so not overly impressed! However I used to work in a pub and had to leave my clothes in another room after my shift as the smell was awful..... During summer (if we can call it that here!) I don't mind going outside, in fact i will probably chose to sit outside. During winter I may be tempted to give up altogether, which can only be a good thing right?! The one thing I'm not sure of is at one point they were talking about fining people for smoking at bus stops or anywhere a group of people gathered inside or out, do you know if they have brought that into force? I don't want to be fined for smoking outside as well, sometimes lighting up is the only way to get a bus to come along in London! If all else fails I will just move back to Playa

FYI, there's been a similar law in Ontario for years now and, as far as resistance or public outcry goes, it was a non-event! I'll be interested to know how it goes in England - come back and tell us later.

We have been smoke free here for the last 2 1/2 yrs. and actually it's quite nice. You just don't even think about it. Now that I am a "recovering" smoker I find it's even nicer to have everything smoke free. It reduces the smoking/drinking temptation. There was a lot of outcry initially, but soon everyone got over it and now I can't imagine walking in to a smoke filled bar.

I am an avid smoker, but I think its the right way to go; I can't think of how smoking was allowed on planes until a few years ago, if you think of the danger of it. In Itlay we already have this law, and, ok I don't live there, but hearing my friends, its not such a bog deal. At restaurants its a great thing for example ( maybe not so much in discos and pubs though
). I think it will do no harm to smokers, wwe always find a way for a smoke.... Quote:

I am a smoker and going out side is not a problem for me or most people I know. Here in town they have been trying to push the no smoking in the bars but now the police are getting those that go out side to smoke with public intox. so it is getting safer to stay home to drink and smoke.

Yesterday was the first day of the SMOKING BAN here in Iceland.
NO smoking in bars, discos or restaurants. Don't know how this will go but quite a few places already have outside areas for the smokers. We'll just have to wait and see how it will be in the wintertime.. People are not going to want to go out to smoke when it's cold. |
