If you had only 1/2 day in Akumal, what would you do?

Hi Gang,
I've been working hard and occassionally coming down to Luna Encantada for a short break. A bunch of our friends left today and now it's just my daughter and me! Finally we can do something other than wait for them to get up....
I've been reading some of the postings i've found here by searching "snorkel" and it looks like a fun thing to do would be to drive to Akumal for a 1/2 and snorkel and eat. We have no gear, so would you suggest we buy it first or rent somewhere there? Is it fairly obvious when you get there where to swim to see the most fish and the turtles? With my talent, we'd spend a whole day there seeing nothing only to find out that we were swimming by the sewage outlet!
The weather is totally gorgeous today! The beach is coming back and life is good.

I really recommend you to snorkel in Akumal Bay. Just head for restaurant Lol Ha and you are going to see the beach from where you can make good snorkeling. You will probably see other people snorkel as well but there is still enough lots of space for you. If you´re going to snorkel just one day I think you should rent your gear. I planned to snorkel more than once so I bought my own equipment at home and brought it with me.

I would do Akumal Bay and rent your equipment at the dive shop just North of Lol-Ha. Spend your 1/2 day right in front of Lol-Ha on the beach with a drink in hand. Snorkel straight out from the restaraunt to the reef. You will see turtles and enough fish to satisfy your needs. 2nd would be to try Yal-Ku lagoon, but you better get there early to beat the bus loads of tours that go there daily starting around 9:30-10:00a.m.

Bingo. Good advice.

Pick a palm tree in front of Lol Ha, plop your stuff and just hang.

Perfect for kids...

When will you be there? Check your PMs.

Wouldn't it depend on the age and/or swimming ability of her daughter?

I'll be taking Iain this year, because he's a much better swimmer (he's six), but I wouldn't have taken him last year.

For younger children (Iain's age or less) I think the beach at Akumal bay is PERFECT. There is a shallow protected swimming area that is usually so calm the water is as flat as glass.

I'd devote the entire 1/2 day snorkeling in the bay then several hours in the small town - our favorite.

Thanks everyone! Lol Ha it is. My daughter is almost 13, so swimming is no problem. If i can get her to get out of bed, we'll be there and i'll report in.
The fog is starting to lift, so hopefully it will be a beautiful day here in paradise!

You will have fun. Lots of turtles and the dive shop there only charges like $5 to $10 to rent for the day.

We stay in Akumal a lot and I agree with everyone--snorkel in front of Lol Ha and then have some lunch.
You can rent gear at Akumal Dive Center, right next to Lol Ha. Also, you can rent a couple of beach chairs for the day right next to Lol ha. $3 each, I believe.
Be sure to walk south just a bit and snorkel in front of Akumal Beach Resort. We usually see a lot there. If you have a car, you could to to Yal Ku, too. I'd really spend a full day in Akumal. You could go to Turtle Bay Bakery for breakfast, which has excellent breakfasts, then snorkel, then have lunch, and snorkel some more! Enjoy!

What is there to do for several hours in the small town of Akumal? (Assuming you are talking about the west side of 307??) I haven't heard of many people in here talking about spending an extended amount of time there. Enlighten me! Thanks...
