Oh there is one being made right now with my name on it. Perfect timing since my iPod went kaput in Playa in January, my cell phone is near the end of the contract and I need to retire my paper date book. iPhone = Perfect!!

They're not available quite yet, apparently, and I didn't see a price listed on the Apple site, but according to this AT&T link, 500 bucks for 4 gigs or 600 for 8 gigs. (AT&T has some temporary exclusivity deal for a few months or something like that, I believe.)

That same link lists

Count me OUT! No 3G capability means slow connection speads when using the Edge network. Touch screen means no ability to type by "feel" with your thumbs. And an internal battery that can not be replaced except by Apple.

With Apple's iPod battery issues, this point alone would keep me from buying one. Add to that a first generation device that you will be paying a hefty price to beta test.

I really am amazed that the iPhone will not work with the 3G network. The main reason I would want one is to have internet and email access anywhere I have access to the AT&T Network. I really don't want the slow speeds of the Edge network when I connect.

I will also add that at $500 for a 4 gig version and a 2 year contract with AT&T, it really isn't worth it. It really makes me consider the Samsung Blackjack for $75 though.

The contact at the carrier was especially confident, sources said.

However I agree on the first generation point, as I also noted before.

It's the same thing that makes me hesitate on the Mazda CX-9, in fact.

A $500 phone that looks as sexy as the iPhone might be worth the "first generation" risk. A $30,000 car, not on your life!
