A Turn For the Worse

Anyone else have the sense the forum's taken one recently?

And if you don't... nevermind.

Do what I do and ignore all the political threads. Doesn't leave much though.

Then if that is not it, is it because I TRIED to start the Weekday Party Thread?

I promise, I'll never try that again.

With less then 400 posts I'm not sure I can say a whole lot. I treat threads like a party. When I mingle at a party I'll go from group to group. Some I enjoy and will stay awhile. Others I leave almost immediately. There do seem to be fewer and fewer threads that I go to or check out. I am enjoying the food forum and the 'Where's That' thread. Plus I will chime in when I can if info is needed and I have the info.

Personally I still find a lot of great information on the "General" threads and the "All-Inclusive" and "Peep Fest" threads. The "General Off Topic" thread makes for spirited debate. The good thing about this board is we don't have a lot of hit and run guys. Most people who participate in the debates tend to stick around.

There are some great personalities here.

On the political stuff, yes, but I think Stewart wrote an articulate what I would call olive branch in the Newt Gingrich thread that Jacko started. Otherwise, there are way too many on both sides who are too quick to paint those with differing opinions with too broad a paintbrush. Once a thread devolves to that point, I tune out.

There are a few new players who aren't nuanced in their communication, or whose method of communication does not translate well when all we can rely on is the words we see on the screen. In however many years I've been on the board, I have NEVER even considered putting someone on my "ignore" list. But within this month, there have been two that I have considered; didn't act on it, but considered.

I think there is also a generational shift going on in the other, more general threads. A little too much vulgarity, t&a, and party-party-party mentality than I am confortable with or interested in. But I know that by reading a few posts, and I stay away. That like-minded people are finding each other and connecting as a community are fine with me; the interests they are connecting over don't really "click" with me, but I am cool with that.

What brought me to this board, and I think what first attracted a lot of us older timers to this board, was because we connected to the playa area: it isn't just a pretty backdrop for our vacation fantasies, it also has interesting cultures, people, personalities and sites that captivated our imaginations and intellects. I miss that aspect that DeniseA, Michael Holmes and Anna used to bring.

Well, I'm always mostly open to constructive information about anything that seems inconsistent with our standards. Send me a PM or use the 'contact us' link at the bottom of the each page. It all gets right to me.

Not sure I really like this thread. What is the point?

As far as turns, the steering wheel is in my hands, I'm watching the road, and I haven't noticed any change of direction.

I read the political threads, but rarely post. I did post in one this weekend that wasn't originally political but turned that way. When I see something that is so ridiculous I can't help myself.

Maybe there should be another category under Off Topic for Political Off-Topic Stuff

As always, James, it's your baby. I hope my PM explains and, if you choose to delete the thread, I understand.

I totally agree with this. When I first started visiting this board I was able to gather lots and lots of information, and pass that information on to new comers. It seems now, when some of the informational questions are asked, they seem to go unnoticed, ignored, or whatever?? Now, it seems that most everything is about drinking and partying, which is fine, just not what I came here for. Perhaps this is just the generational thing, you speak of?? Also, when I brought this up a few weeks ago, Anna said it was the season, and perhaps that contributes, as well. Whatever it is, I miss they way it used to be.

the general forum still looks pretty much the same to me and the off-topic is what it is and has always been.........maybe we need to remember to separate the two
