Cataract Surgery
Well, as some of you know I've been kinda of scarce on here lately. I have a lot on my plate right now. Some good things, date boy
, some not so good things, too many to name and some in between things, moving and...cataract surgery. Yep, it's looking like at the ripe ol' age of 'almost 39' I am going to have to have cataract surgery on my right eye. My eye doctor noticed it two years ago and mentioned it again at my last exam last September...just something to keep an eye on...heehee Well, I've been doing a lot of reading lately and noticed that the vision in my right eye is crap, so I went in and she thought it was probably time to do something about it. Let me tell you I was shocked how bad the vision was in my right eye in the controled environment of her exam room...it's bad! I have a consultation on July 24, I have way too much going on in June so I scheduled it for July and they went ahead and tentatively scheduled the surgery for August 14. I'm a little nervous, but okay with it. My Mom's had it and so have other people I know, it's simple procedure. For one thing, it just feels like one more thing on my already full plate. For another...I have to wear my glasses for a month before my consultation! Anyone else have this surgery? How'd it go? What should I expect? I've done some research, but it would be good to get people's thoughts on it. |

Sorry to hear that things are running soso for you.
As for the surgery: I have been present at about ten of those and they are amazing to watch AND indeed a very small surgery. A very small incision is put next to your iris (all of this is done under magnifying glasses so to speak.....the instruments are teeny weenie), first your old lens is dissolved via a special technique and then the put the new one in which sort of inflates all by itself in the eye- it's amazing to watch that so I guess the first thing some of those patients saw with their new lense was me with my mouth gaping wide open!! Usually those surgeries are done in local anaesthesia here with the patient being awake. So first they inject an anaesthetic under your sclera. I had that done and it is NOT that bad. Really. It is more a psychological thing- as they give you eyedrops first you do not feel the puncturing of the needle, only a bit of pressure!! So- I'd say don't worry!! The injection part isn't that bad and none of the patients I saw complained of anything during the procedure! And it is total routine these days- I saw all ten in the course of one morning! That is how fast they go!! |

Don't be frightened, Belinda. It's amazing what they can do for the eye nowadays. And as Babs stated, there's little or no pain involved. Heck... my father had a cornea transplant at age 76. How's THAT for medical "miracles"!! (and just one more reason to be an organ donor!) Sorry you've had so much on your plate of late. Need a hug?? Here's one for ya ((((HUG)))) !!!

Hi PB,
I was wondering where you have been. Cataract surgery is so advanced nowadays. You will be fine. Just follow the doctor's orders. Especially about bending over to pick things up and/or picking up things that are heavy. Hang in there. I'll be thinking about you.

I didn't mean for this to be a 'feel sorry for me' thread.
I have good things going on too! I've lost 33 lbs, I'm dating a great guy and um...other things too. And the cataract surgery is technically a good thing, just a little nerve-wracking. I so appreciate all your hugs and good thoughts! I'll keep you all updated. I know it will be fine, I'm just a tad nervous.
