Planning a trip for my husband and myself to celebrate our 27th wedding anniversary. Will be traveling during huricane season - September 22 through September 29 - so hope it is a quiet season!! I'm sure I will be asking many questions - the only place we have visited in Mexico is Cancun and Isla Mujeres - I loved Isla Mujeres - my husband liked Cancun better...this time we are gong to try Playa.

It will be interesting to hear your reaction after your visit. You're sort of "splitting the difference" with your trip. Playa is more like Isla Mujeres than Cancun, but more so, in my opinion. Sort of like Mujeres on steroids. But on the other hand, sort of like Cancun on Valium.

That is kind of what I thought...

I thought that Playa might be more like Isla...just a little more upscale at some places...would that be correct? If so, then we might both get what we want in a vacation...imagine that??

More variety and plenty more options in things to do in Playa. Not that Mujeres isn't fine. It's a great place to go and just veg on the beach, but not a whole lot of activities available. You can be a beach potato in Playa as well, but if you want to do more things, you have a lot of choices.

I am also a new member to this forum and also from Missouri. My wife and I will be going to the Royal in October for our 25th anniversary. We have never been on a trip out of the country. Although we did a cruise 4 years ago. We are excited about going to Playa. We have heard many good things about the area.

Hey BBQ Bob...

Where are you from in Kansas City...we lived in Olathe, Kansas for 20 years and just recently semi-retired to Mountain Grove, Missouri. And, as it ends up, we may be going on our trip in October instead of September (as we have a 2nd grandchild due 9/14...may be to close for comfort to plan a trip in September). When are you going in October...and have you guys decided on a hotel yet? We are still deciding (my husband wants AI...I want something smaller and on the beach). Maybe we will see you guys there...talk to you soon.

Another welcome from a fellow Missourian. Well, technically I live in Kansas now, but please don't hold that against me!

You may want to consider Shangri-La...it's not AI, but semi-inclusive (breakfast and dinner). Another fantastic option on the beach is Playa Maya hotel. While not AI, it's a great place. Coconut Shrimp to die for! An added plus: the manager, Steve Ryberg, is also originally from K.C. and a very nice guy. That's where I'm leaning towards staying this year.
