-My Cubans took a point! Fidel should let them have their own apartments and toilet paper.
-There's only 1 team that has won both of its first 2 games. -Guadaloupe is leading its group? -I'm sure I'm going to learn some interesting new words tomorrow in the warehouse that I work in and from the Spanish language sports radio talk shows that take calls from listeners. |

He didn't do much for Manchester City, but Damarcus Beasley had 2 for the US as we beat El Salvador 4-0.
Mexico is on Wednesday in Houston, against a tough Panama team. |

Hugo, do you have some cheese to go with that Whine?
Mexican coach Hugo Sanchez complains about the field at Reliant Stadium. Hugo, what's the field going to be like when Mexico has to play in Kingston, San Pedro Sula, Port of Spain or Mazatenango? |

Cuba remembered that they are Cuba. They lost 5-0 to Honduras. But the big news is that 2 of their players defected. You know Cuba is messed up when a career as a pro soccer player in the US is a step up for you.
Mexico beat the big, strong, fast Panamanians 1-0. Now the US has Panama, who had a guy kicked out, in the quarterfinals. Mexico faces Costa Rica. |

Yes, now we have this:
![]() The U.S. was the only team to win all 3 of its games in the first round; at the next level, Canada, Honduras & Mexico each won 2 and lost 1 (Honduras having the tie-breaker over Mexico on head-to-head play after their victory over El Tri). Steve |

I remain impressed by the play of the second tier CONCACAF teams. Look for a surprise or two in the quarters and semis. I would not be surprised in Mexico goes down. While the rest of the region seems to be improving, Hugo Sanchez looks to be leading his team in the opposite direction. He bullied his way into that job. I hope he gets the boot, sooner rather than later.
The new and improved US team is playing really well. I look for them to win it, and then pull some upsets in Venezuela. Watch out, Argentina! |

Thought I might get prepared and start a Copa América thread apart from this one (hopefully not overkill). Check it out, if you like.

Newsflash! Sun rises in east! Paris Hilton receives undeserved publicity! Playa.info Peep Meet attendee becomes slightly tipsy! And......
international soccer is set up to benefit large, powerful countries. Costa Rica's coach (who used to play in Mexico) says that the Gold Cup is rigged to favor the US & Mexico. Not to be a buzzkill, Hernan, but what on this planet is not rigged to favor large, powerful countries? (In international soccer, at least, Mexico is a powerful country.) |

Getting ready for the U.S. to take on Panama here today. Seems like the Canada-Guatemala match should be over with by now, but I can't seem to find any results on it...
In the meantime, however, I did run across this interesting bit: Quote:

Well if the U.S. can manage in the second half to actually get the ball to go into the net on a couple of these excellent chances they've had, they'll be facing Canada in Chicago next, as the Canadians ousted the Guatemaltecos 3-0 earlier today in Foxboro...
...and there you go. Panama hung on there rather persistently, consistent in that respect with your remarks, Mark. Updated version, now: ![]() Steve Last edited by ryberg; 06-16-2007 at 06:02 PM.. |

Break up Canada! OK, maybe that's the wrong metaphor to use here.
But near the end of the game, the Telefutura announcer said (if my questionable Spanish has not betrayed me), "They should hold the Maple Leaf flag high, because there was really only one team on the field and it was Canada." I hope that the 2nd part of the 2nd half was part of a cunning plot by the US coach? If we intentionally play like crap after we have a lead, Canada and other opponents won't have as much video of us to analyze? Mexico - Ticos is going to be a great game. |
