new eco-park Xplore slated to open summer 2008

The Xcaret Group is going for another one: Xplore (location as yet undecided) will be another new RM eco-park, planned to open summer of 2008 and to have a less commercial, more nature-oriented focus, including for example caves & cenotes. This according to recent press articles on the subject here.

The newspaper article I read said the location was yet to be determined, just that about involving caves & cenotes and a less commercial, more nature-oriented focus. It was accompanied by a shot of a diver in a cenote, for what that may be worth.

'Discuss' huh, Steve .....my only reaction would be don't they have enough of these park already in the area? Xcaret, Xel Ha, Aktun Chen, Tres Rios, that other one with the caves......how many big parks do you need along that coast? Pretty soon there won't be any natural uncommercialized cenotes to go see on your own.

That's my feeling, too, and I don't feel completely confident in the Xcaret Group's positioning itself as stewards of the environment.

I suspect that they bought out that smallish place -- Kantun-Chi, something like that, I think they're affiliated with the family that runs Hotel Hulku. It's not on the coast, though, it's on the inland side of 307.

I thought that Tres Rios was closed? I hope not. I liked it. And when you consider the price difference, I liked it a lot more than Xcaret.

I sure hope that "Xplore" doesn't have Xcaret's pricing.

Esh-plore? Sounds like someone was indulging in too many adult beverages when they came up with that one.

I remember reading a trip report by Heather, am fairly certain the trip was to Baccalar. I thought it seemed like a terrific off the path kind of place.

I don't have the right to complain about development of any area in which I don't have a vested interest. But I am getting the feeling that in a decade or so, the Riviera may no longer hold appeal for the type of get away I have come to appreciate from the Yucatan coast. I'll just keep an open mind and stay tuned.

Its a quiet little town on the edge of a beautiful lake that is so clean and so clear its like getting into a swimming pool, there is little traffic and pretty much tourist free (not that i have a problem with tourists.... phew that was close!!!) but like Playa and Tulum and many other small towns it will be developed and will be full of condo;s and AIs but i suppose thats what they call progress....sigh .

Shhh! That place is Quintana Roo's best kept secret! And thank you guys for misspelling its name so it would be harder to find additional info on the search engines!

I like beautiful natural places to remain untouched, however when their turn to get "developed" comes, I'd always prefer a Xcaret-type park to condos.

I heard that the company that owns it,,,is devloping it and building a resort there. It;s the time-share comp that owns Fishermans village and a couple of hotel/resorts in Cancun. We really liked that park..it had a cenote that you could float down the river into the ocean.
As for keeping something un-commercial....Really? How can it be natural when there are hordes of tourists around peeing and trashing the place? Xpu-Ha was an eco=park and it was developed into a resort. They are building at Yal-ku too. We loved that lagoon before the tourist companies found out about it.
The first time we went to Xel-Ha..in 93, we thought we died and went to heaven. the water was crystal clear, more intense color, lots of colorfish all over the place, and smaller crowds. Last time we visited, 2 years ago was a huge let-down. We won't go back.
I am willing to bet there will be resorts built in the biosphere in a few years...greed for money will be to hard to pass up.
