Peepin' In The South II (through my tequila goggles)
Friday, June 8, 2007
The mere fact that we were attending PITS II, after we decided to go, brought us more excitement than did last year’s trip to Playa. This may seem impossible, but it’s not. After 2,100 some-odd posts (which I never thought I would achieve), many gab threads, tequila threads, food threads, political/religious threads, and of course PUI threads, I had not met a single peep (with the exception of Susan and one other guy I’d known before he joined). We were excited about big things, like whether we’d brought enough tequila or whether or not people would like the Peepinweizen. However, we were much more excited about the simple things, like how people would react when they saw us for the first time, and that we would be able to put voices to faces, real names, and screen names. Because of this, we knew the 360 mile journey to Lower Alabama would seem endless. We loaded into the car our suitcases, 2 cases of Peepinweizen, 6 bottles of tequila, Nalgene bottles, and other random junk. I never thought that I would be taking this much stuff for a 48 hour vacation! Oh well, everything we were taking had a distinct purpose and an important role in the success of the weekend! We rolled around 7:30 am EDT, and began what was a thankfully uneventful drive through southwest Georgia, then southeast and southwest Alabama. ![]() Sorry bro, not today, we’re goin’ PEEPIN’ ![]() ![]() Traffic didn’t become heavy until we got to Foley, AL, which is about 8 or 10 miles north of our destination. This did, however, give Susan an easier time with taking pictures while driving. We did snap a few that we thought were cool, especially this one, that we thought one particular peep would appreciate: ![]() ![]() DudeAdam had been texting me at various points along the way, asking for updates on our arrival time. I recall getting one about 30 miles east of Montgomery, then again when we got onto AL-59, the home stretch to Gulf Shores! He had also been taunting me at work on Thursday, saying that they were already in Gulf Shores, basking in the sunlight and enjoying cold adult beverages. After what seemed like an eternity, we crossed over the Intracostal Waterway, and turned west toward Island Winds West, our home for the next two days. ![]() Wendy (Tonya’s friend) was most generous in offering to rent us her condo for the weekend (thanks, Wendy J). It’s a very very nice, fifth floor two bed, two bath unit with a partial ocean view! I would like to add that very prominently placed in the unit is one of Tonya’s paintings (of the green and white boat on the beach in Playa ). With the exception of a brief scare with the cleaning function on the oven, we were settled in no time!Following a brief period of repose, I called DudeAdam to tell him that we were on our way to the beach house, and that they had better be there! I stood out on the balcony of our building and saw a house that was just like the one in the picture, so I figured that had to be it. We committed the address to memory, and made our way over. Unfortunately, when we arrived at that house, it wasn’t the correct address. Thanks, Google Maps ![]() . We were about 3 blocks off the mark. So by the time we arrived at the house, we were sweating pretty hard. BigDave was the first to greet us. Upon entry, we were happily greeted by Suzy (jflattracker), Suzy’s son Shane, and Traci (cjgans)! We visited for a few moments, drank some beers, and shot some Tres Generaciones Anejo. MMMMM. We couldn’t sit and chat too long though, for it was nearly time to ready ourselves for the big kick-off event at the home of the wonderful Tonya (Tesla573) and her rockin’ husband Harold! Adam, Susan, and I went back to our condo to collect the Peepinweizen and the tequila, and make our way to the party. Good thing Adam has a big ol’ pick up truck, otherwise I wouldn’t know how on earth we would have gotten all that beer and tequila to its desitnation. Whew! Upon arrival, the scene was set for what was to be a monumental occasion. The lawn was perfectly manicured. The deck was adorned with beautiful round oil lanterns of colored glass. The fountain in the pool was a-flowin’, just like the tequila and beer would be in short order. Tonya and Harold’s home is amazing. I want my kitchen to look like theirs some day! In addition to the kick-off of PITS II, this was also Harold’s son’s birthday! Woohoo! Our shrimp dinner, steamin’ away! ![]() Fine ladies ready to partay! (gumbo cooking on the stove in the background) ![]() On the left is Tonya’s sister, Pat, who was kind enough to prepare the evening’s feast! Susan helps place the hors d’oevres, while others get down to business: ![]() ![]() Adam gives tequila shootin’ instructions. Dave comes in, moments after the shot was consumed, angered for having been excluded: ![]() He left us with no option, but to do another shot: ![]() Susan is ready to party: ![]() Relaxing outside: ![]() ![]() ![]() Shane had a blast in the pool: ![]() Here, he avoids the camera: ![]() Finally, the Peepinweizen is cold and ready for consumption. Adam and I show that Peepinweizen and tequila ARE a great combo: ![]() Harold and Dave: ![]() Susan says, “Put the damn camera down and go drink more tequila!” ![]() We found out that, sadly, Charity (pamplemoose77) and Melissa (tommygurl) were stuck in traffic and were still a ways away. L We decided to hold off the dolphin cruise until they arrived. I went out to get a picture of the back yard and lagoon: ![]() As I made my way back to the house, I thought I saw…could it be? Yes, it was! Charity and Melissa had arrived. Charity quickly found her way to the non-alcoholic beverages. Here, Harold asks for reassurance that she is consuming a virgin margarita and not a special mastequilapf oober strong one! ![]() After they relaxed for a few moments, all peeps were ordered to the boats: ![]() Everyone was very excited: ![]() ![]() I didn’t miss a beat with my cup of frosty Peepinweizen: ![]() Full steam ahead, Captain! ![]() ![]() ![]() Unfortunately, none of us were slick enough with our cameras to catch any of the dolphins, but we did see some, we promise. All you who didn’t see them in person will just have to settle for this: ![]() Here, Suzy documents the fact that I am documenting just about everything that could be documented that evening: ![]() After much anticipation, time for dinner had arrived, prepared by our wonderful chef, Pat: ![]() ![]() ![]() I don’t think I’ve eaten this well in a long time! This really was an amazing meal. Barbecue chicken, beans, shrimp, gumbo, mashed potatoes. A feast for royalty! After dinner, however, we didn’t waste any time getting back to the tequila: ![]() Coco tries his hand at stealing the ladies’ hearts. He succeeds! ![]() And more tequila: ![]() Tonya, expressing satisfaction after having consumed a luscious shot of tequila and a juicy lime: ![]() After dinner, Susan, Adam, and I decided to hang out with Shane in the pool. About that time, one of the glass oil lamps found the floor and singed Adam’s leghairs in the process! ![]() The pain was eased with tequila and Peepinweizen. However, at this point, our designated driver, had become fatigued and indicated that she was ready to leave. Since she was our ride home, Adam, Susan, and I made somewhat conscious decisions to leave the party. Keep in mind that these decisions were made out of respect for her and her wellbeing, and not because we were drunk or passed out or anything like that, or the fact that it was a little after 10:00pm. On the way home, we all got a little comfy in Charity’s cool car. All of us tequila-crazed bums do thank you for hauling our drunk arses around. I don’t know what we would have done with out you. Thank you! Needless to say, we were done for the night! Adam opted to take the spare room instead of returning to the beach house. We all knew that we needed our beauty sleep for the festivities of tomorrow!
